At Wellington College International School, our holistic education encourages well-rounded development, so the individual scholarship is targeted at pupils who exhibit outstanding performance in the arts, sports and music. One of our year 5 pupils, Cheryl, is a music scholar at the school. In today’s We are Wellington, we interviewed her mother, who shared her insight on choosing Wellington and Cheryl’s music journey at the school. How should one find a school that aims for academic excellence and individual development where a child can feel like a fish in water and thrive? Let us find out more from Cheryl’s mother. Please give us a brief introduction to the family and Cheryl. Cheryl joined Wellington College Hangzhou family in its founding year in 2018 and is now a year 5 pupil at Wellington College International Hangzhou. She loves playing the piano and cello, ballet and travelling. She is also a wonderful older sister to both her younger siblings. Cheryl is a founding pupil of Wellington from 2018, what was your first impression of the school? What attracted you to choose Wellington for Cheryl? I eagerly visited the campus even though it was still under construction. From my initial visit, I believed that Wellington would be the first of its kind in Hangzhou with such a high standard for facilities – a large swimming pool, gym and grand theatre for professional performances. I was extremely satisfied with the hardware facilities. Furthermore, I felt assured when I learnt the school hires highly skilled teachers through Wellington group’s global recruitment events and that every teacher must meet strict requirements set by the group. We were also delighted to find that the school’s educational ethos aligned with ours as a family. These were the reasons we chose Wellington above many other schools. What was the biggest challenge for Cheryl when she first joined Wellington, and how did she overcome it? When Cheryl first joined Wellington, she was a bit shy and reluctant to express her opinions. However, with the encouragement and support from the teachers at Wellington, she adjusted to her new environment smoothly and made many good friends. Cheryl has talents in music and is one of the music scholars. What is it that contributes to her success? I think the scholarship programme can be something that drives a child to work harder, make substantial learning objectives for a specific period of time and eventually improve their academic performance. Once recognised by the outside world, children will find more confidence to demonstrate their talent and become a better version of themselves. Can you please share Cheryl’s music journey? Cheryl started to learn two musical instruments at a very young age. She began to learn piano at four and cello at seven. Learning to play an instrument can be a tedious task; it requires one to practice unremittingly year after year. Like many children learning to play an instrument at a young age, Cheryl felt occasionally overwhelmed, especially when she had just started to learn to read music. However, she was always encouraged and supported by Wellington and us as parents to overcome her fear of challenge. In these few years at Wellington, her love for music has grown massively. At seven, she won first prize in the Seven Skills competition hosted by the Hangzhou Education Bureau. When she was eight, she scored 142 out of 150 on her ABRSM Grade 8 exam, the highest grade for amateur players, and 132 on her ABRSM Grade 3 cello exam. At the age of nine, she gained 74 out of 75 in her ABRSM Grade 5 musical theory exam. It was also the year when she had her personal concert at the Opera House at Hangzhou Grand Theatre, which was well received by the audience. Last year, Cheryl participated in the national final of the Steinway & Sons Piano Competition for the Youth in China as a top 3 player in the eastern region of China. Such rewarding results could not be obtained without the support from Wellington’s philosophy of education, well-rounded talents and professional guidance from the Wellington teachers, as well as her passion for music and diligent practice. From your perspective, how does Wellington support Cheryl’s well-rounded development, academically and personally? Since joining Wellington, Cheryl’s English speaking and writing skills have improved dramatically. She is now a more independent learner that requires no pushing from her parents to complete her homework. We are proud that Cheryl won several Wellington Academic Attainment Awards. As for personal growth, she is more confident and courageous. She has made good friends at school and now looks forward to going to school every day.Can you please share the most unforgettable story of your child at Wellington? Cheryl is a member of the choir. In each of the five years since the founding of the Wellington College Hangzhou choir, we have lit the Christmas tree accompanied by the beautiful songs of the choir . Children singing, parents enjoining hot mulled wine – how festive it has been! It is definitely what we love to do on cold winter days. Christmas celebrations at Wellington HangzhouOf the five Wellington values of courage, respect, integrity, kindness and responsibility, which is most important to you and your family? Why? Do you think your child’s behaviour fulfilled the Wellington key values? Can you give us some examples? I think all Wellington values are of vital importance. Cheryl shows courage as she fearlessly embraces challenges head-on. She respects others and recognises them, and takes any assignment set by teachers seriously. She can tell right from wrong and has a great sense of responsibility. What’s your education goal and plan for Cheryl? What are your expectations for Cheryl at Wellington and her life beyond? I want Cheryl to enjoy her childhood at Wellington College International Hangzhou, equip herself with knowledge, and appreciate her time with teachers and friends. Beyond this, I also hope Cheryl can attend her ideal university for future study. At Wellington College International Hangzhou in Wellington College Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive in an ever-changing world. Community is at the centre of all we do at Wellington. We continuously strive to work together with our parents, staff and pupils to develop that strong sense of community that makes international schools unique. In this series of "We Are Wellington" articles, we aim to tell the stories of those families and highlight the special contributions they make to our community.

This is the third We are Wellington article this academic year from Mrs Samantha Bard, mother of Amandine (Year 6) and Elise (Year 1). The family moved from France to Hangzhou in 2021. >>> Great teacher support Amandine and Elise enrolled at wellington College International Hangzhou in August 2021. Before joining, the family consulted a couple of friends, compared a few international schools in Hangzhou, discussed questions and concerns with teachers, and Wellington was the best choice for our children. The family believes that Wellington pursues academic excellence and cares about every pupil's wellbeing, providing an all-round education for pupils. Due to travel restrictions, Amandine and Elise could not physically attend school until December 2021. However, they received tremendous support from the teachers at school, including Ms Paradine, Mr Norman, Ms Dunbar, Ms Gallacher, Ms Gianotti, Ms Song, Ms Moon and Ms Miller. In addition, the two girls had regular online lessons that helped them to feel part of the school community from the start. They sincerely appreciate the extra effort made by the teachers. >>> Learning and developing in a diverse environment Amandine and Elise spoke mainly French, some Chinese, and practically no English before coming to China. When they join the school, they are immediately integrated. They enjoy the friendly learning atmosphere. They love the variety of art activities offered at Wellington. Amandine participated in theYear 6 End of Unit celebration For Year 6, Amandine is deeply involved in the learning process. Rather than sit and listen, she can learn a topic by researching, remembering and remaking it. Recently, she participated and performed in the Year 6 end of unit celebration - Maya Museum learning journey. The family was also invited to the school to be present and support Amandine. Through which, as parents, we understood what Amandine has learnt and achieved at school. For Year 1, Elise is learning by using her hands, moving her body and speaking and talking aloud. She is shy, but she is becoming more and more confident. Elise is delighted to go to school every day. That is all because of the encouragement from her teachers and the personalised care she receives. To the family, all five Wellington values are fundamental. We want our children to be especially respectful. Respecting other people, respecting different cultures and traditions, and respecting the environment are essential to our highly connected society.

This is the second of three We are Wellington articles this academic year from Mrs Chloe Kim Lee, mother of Joey (Year 7) and Samuel (Year 8). The family moved from South Korea to Hangzhou in 2020. This was the first time Mrs Lee and her children moved to and lived in a new country. >>> Growing up with Wellington When the Lee family decided to move to Hangzhou, they spent a lot of time choosing a suitable school for their children. Finally, Wellington College International Hangzhou was recommended to them by a friend in the Korean community. Wellington College International Hangzhou opened in September 2018 with the clear mission of being a leading international school in China and beyond. It offers an outstanding international education with a truly global outlook. Keeping with their commitment to inclusivity and providing a caring learning community, they warmly welcome families of all nationalities. Joey's Year 6 graduation One of the reasons Mr and Mrs Lee selected Wellington over other international schools was their feeling that they could grow together both on their new journey and start a new life in a new country in a newly built school. After their campus tour, they felt the passion of Wellington and were convinced by the excellent education system offered at the school. >>> An inspiring learning approach The main goal at Wellington is to generate a love of learning that develops and prepares pupils for success in this formative stage of their life and beyond. The Wellington curriculum is rigorous and stretches pupils. It has been designed to meet the needs of each individual by giving a breadth of educational experience and an academic depth that prepares them to move forward. Samuel and Joey only joined Wellington one year ago. English and Chinese are not their first language. But, with the support from professional teachers, kind staff members and their friends, they caught up with their classmates within a few months. It is a proud experience for them. Samuel has been invited to the Pupil Voice interview recently, talking about his study of English as Second Language Joey has participated and won the second place in the Education Perfect International Languages Championships 2021 “Courage”, one of the five Wellington values, means a lot to the Lee family. Life is a series of challenges to try new things, and courage is vital energy. Both Samuel and Joey are not afraid to ask questions in classes with courage. Their teachers answer all questions full of kindness. The teachers at Wellington have a wealth of knowledge and a wide range of prior experience in many sectors that they use to enrich the learning experience of the pupils. To Mrs Lee, comfortable interaction is as important as knowledge transfer. Last year, one of the children asked how he could become an international school teacher in the future. >>> A diverse and kind community As a family, they enjoy the diverse community. Samuel and Joey are shaped by various thinking styles immersed in different cultures. Sometimes they find a new opportunity or better choice and learn how to get along with others. They have also experienced the kindness of the Wellington community. It opens to everyone with passion. People can communicate, exchange helpful information, and participate in community events and initiatives. This helped the Lee family to understand more about Wellington and find their role as parents. At Wellington, we are committed to an all-round education. We aim to provide all pupils with as many valid experiences as possible to help them to develop and mature.

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive in an ever-changing world. This is the first of three articles in the 2021-22 series from Mrs. Simone Vogt, mother of Isabelle (Year 3). Mr. and Mrs. Vogt moved to China from Germany in 2020. They have three children: Isabelle, Valentin, and Leonard. Isabelle joined Wellington College International Hangzhou in Year 2, and Valentin is now attending Hiba Academy Hangzhou. >>> Personalised support from teachers At Wellington College International Hangzhou, expert teachers highly differentiate teaching; they understand that every pupil is unique. Therefore, pupils who meet the admissions requirements and are admitted into the school will receive a personalised learning journey to ensure they thrive both academically and socially during their time at Wellington. This offering convinced the Vogt family during their first visit to the school. They believe that Wellington College International Hangzhou is the correct choice for their children. They chose Wellington over other international schools because of the high academic standard and how Isabelle’s schedule would be individualised once she joined the school. Isabelle could catch up with her classmates within a few months through individualised learning. German is Isabelle’s first language. School has provided an individual schedule for her and one-on-one sessions with support teachers, who taught her how to develop her English and keep up with the pace in all other lessons. >>> Growing as an independent individual Our youngest Wellingtonians are encouraged to develop their learning skills in stimulating, colourful and child-friendly surroundings. The guidance from teachers plays a significant part in Isabelle’s growth. She listens and follows the advice of her teachers. As a result, Isabelle is full of curiosity. She adapts her behaviour from the teachers and learns the school values and identities, such as Kindness and independence. As a result, she has stepped out of her comfort zone and is proud of her newly discovered behaviours and skills, which takes courage. Isabelle has gained more and more confidence over her time at Wellington College International Hangzhou. She has been highly motivated to improve in each lesson. The whole atmosphere is very welcoming, and Isabelle quickly found good friends. >>> A warm and welcoming community Summer Carnival 2020 At Wellington, we value the spirit of community. Therefore, we invite parents interested in contributing to come along, get involved, and play an integral part in school life. Any role, large or small, is valuable, appreciated and welcomed. Halloween 2021 All Wellington parents from their year group have welcomed the Vogt family and made great friends. They have been participating in and supporting school events and activities throughout the year. They encourage more families to join the ‘Friends of Wellington’ to build our community even more. Wellington College International Hangzhou takes tremendous pride in internationalism and our diverse community. We believe that every child is unique. Therefore, our responsibility is to provide them with as many good experiences as possible to help them find themselves as they grow and mature and become the very best they can be.

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive within an ever-changing world. In fact, this is our vision statement. Community is at the centre of all we do at Wellington, and we continuously strive to work together with our parents, staff and pupils to develop that strong sense of community that makes international schools unique. In this series of ‘We Are Wellington’ articles, we aim to tell the stories of those families and highlight the special contributions they make to our community. This week’s article in the series was written by Audrey’s mother, a university lecturer in a Performing Arts department, who reflects on why she and her husband, an enterprise manager in environmental water governance, chose Wellington College International Hangzhou for their daughter Audrey. Audrey, who was born in Hong Kong, joined Wellington College International Hangzhou in September last year and has continued to grow and achieve in Year 4. When learning expectations meet educational philosophy When choosing a school for Audrey, my husband and I held firm in our expectation that Audrey be able to pursue her fields of interests and develop her own set of personal values. We carefully considered several schools’ educational philosophies and the values they instill in their pupils. The Wellington Values of courage, respect, integrity, kindness and responsibility are exactly the values we want our children to develop. We were drawn to Wellington for how the school encourages pupils to explore and express themselves, develop their self-confidence and shape their individual personalities. By learning how to solve problems, work collaboratively and care for others, we knew Audrey would find her sense of belonging within our family and her school community. Wellington’s unique education philosophy made us confident that our learning expectations for Audrey would be met. Embedding Wellington Values in daily life For reasons known to all, this year is a special year and a difficult time. For our family, we have tried to take advantage of this increased time together and learn more about each other in the process. eLearning was a challenge for children and their parents, but it was also a good opportunity to learn. All of Audrey’s teachers were patient and responsible, making great efforts to ensure the curriculum was accessible and effective for children during such an unusual time. Audrey won a Wellington Values House point for her excellent performance during the eLearning period, which made her very excited and proud to be bringing honour to her house. When returning to school, we were quite satisfied with how the school ensured a smooth transition from eLearning to classroom learning, as well as their strict adherence to health and safety protocols. These reassured us that Audrey would remain safe while still enjoying this opportunity to be with her classmates and teachers again. In just one year of study at Wellington College International Hangzhou, we have already seen how Audrey has become more confident, independent and kind; learning how to evaluate decisions and act in accordance with the Wellington Values. We believe that the teachers at Wellington teach their children to be kind, courageous, respectful, responsible and act with integrity in their daily lessons and school life. Teachers are keen to guide children in discovering their talents and develop these passions. They are also experienced in cultivating our children’s cooperative spirits and international outlooks, both of which are essential qualities for future global citizens. Audrey is an example of how the Wellington Values are influencing my child perceptibly, making her more confident and cheerful, willing to think independently, form her own judgments and challenge herself. They influence her thoughts, feelings and decisions about herself and her world. As parents, we are really grateful to see how much Audrey has achieved this academic year. Engaging in school activities and community events Various school activities and community events are one of the elements that makes Wellington special. Audrey was able to take an active role in several activities this year at Wellington College International Hangzhou. Audrey performed well in last year’s Sports Day and won two medals for “Best Effort” and “Sprint Winner.” For the Christmas performance last December, we were surprised to learn that Audrey was one of the soloists and we really enjoyed watching the play. Due to the special time, the school has not been able to hold any offline community events since February. When looking back on the events the school organised last year, however, it makes me proud to know that the Chinese New Year celebrations helped inform Audrey about her country’s culture and traditions, which as Chinese parents serve as the foundation of our family. As for Audrey, I think her favorite event was the Christmas Party. After all, she sure can eat a lot of candy, can’t she?
