Mrs. Lee
This is the second of three We are Wellington articles this academic year from Mrs Chloe Kim Lee, mother of Joey (Year 7) and Samuel (Year 8). The family moved from South Korea to Hangzhou in 2020. This was the first time Mrs Lee and her children moved to and lived in a new country.
Growing up with Wellington
When the Lee family decided to move to Hangzhou, they spent a lot of time choosing a suitable school for their children. Finally, Wellington College International Hangzhou was recommended to them by a friend in the Korean community.
Wellington College International Hangzhou opened in September 2018 with the clear mission of being a leading international school in China and beyond. One of the reasons Mr and Mrs Lee selected Wellington over other international schools was their feeling that they could grow together both on their new journey and start a new life in a new country in a newly built school. After their campus tour, they felt the passion of Wellington and were convinced by the excellent education system offered at the school.
An inspiring learning approach
The main goal at Wellington is to generate a love of learning that develops and prepares pupils for success in this formative stage of their life and beyond. The Wellington curriculum is rigorous and stretches pupils. It has been designed to meet the needs of each individual by giving a breadth of educational experience and an academic depth that prepares them to move forward.
Samuel and Joey only joined Wellington one year ago. English and Chinese are not their first language. But, with the support from professional teachers, kind staff members and their friends, they caught up with their classmates within a few months. It is a proud experience for them.

Joey has participated and won the second place in the Education Perfect International Languages Championships 2021
“Courage”, one of the five Wellington values, means a lot to the Lee family. Life is a series of challenges to try new things, and courage is vital energy. Both Samuel and Joey are not afraid to ask questions in classes with courage. Their teachers answer all questions full of kindness. The teachers at Wellington have a wealth of knowledge and a wide range of prior experience in many sectors that they use to enrich the learning experience of the pupils.
To Mrs Lee, comfortable interaction is as important as knowledge transfer. Last year, one of the children asked how he could become an international school teacher in the future.
A diverse and kind community
As a family, they enjoy the diverse community. Samuel and Joey are shaped by various thinking styles immersed in different cultures. Sometimes they find a new opportunity or better choice and learn how to get along with others.
They have also experienced the kindness of the Wellington community. It opens to everyone with passion. People can communicate, exchange helpful information, and participate in community events and initiatives. This helped the Lee family to understand more about Wellington and find their role as parents.
At Wellington, we are committed to an all-round education. We aim to provide all pupils with as many valid experiences as possible to help them to develop and mature.
