We welcomed everyone to WCCH's much-awaited Literacy Week. It was an exciting opportunity for all of us to celebrate the joy of reading, writing, and storytelling. We enjoyed a series of events and activities throughout the week to make the experience engaging and fun.

"I read for pleasure and that is the moment I learn the most."

- Margaret Atwood (poet & author)

As part of the celebration, we were thrilled to have had visiting authors from diverse backgrounds who shared their experiences and took us on a journey through their stories, illustrations, and even shared their writing skills through workshops. In addition, we also arranged a book fair and a book market where pupils browsed through a vast collection of new and pre-loved books and discovered new and exciting reads. To make the week even more entertaining, we encouraged all pupils to dress up as their favourite book characters on World Book Day. This not only promoted creativity and imagination but also brought characters to life and helped foster a love for literature. We hoped the week was filled with laughter, learning, and literary magic!

Visiting authors

Pupils across the campus were privileged to meet two wonderful authors. Our nursery and primary pupils enjoyed sessions with author and illustrator Karin Littlewood, who introduced one of her most popular books Immi. She took pupils on a storytelling journey through the Arctic and explored with them how to tell many different stories for the same character using the ideas of ‘what if…’ and ‘maybe…’. Karin also presented her story of being an illustrator and artist with our Junior High and Senior School pupils.

Bali Rai, a renowned writer of books for upper primary and secondary pupils, also visited to share his experiences of writing with our Junior High and Senior School pupils. Many of our pupils were also lucky to experience creative writing workshops with Bali. Together they worked through the development of characters and plots, which pupils will then be able to apply to their next pieces of fiction writing.

Book fair

As a continuing tradition of literacy week, we held a book fair in the WCIH Atrium. Pupils were excited to choose their next great read when they visited with their classes and independently during morning and lunch breaks. If parents would like to know where they can purchase English language books, please contact the library team who can share details of many different online bookstores.

Once again, our classrooms were visited by characters from classic and modern stories. Merdia, Banana Boy, Captain Hook, Thing 1, Mathilda, Spider Man, Rainbow Fish, Three Little Pigs and the Wolf, Captain America, Zhu Ge Liang, The Grinch, Claudia, Sherlock Holmes, Gandalf, Cruella Deville, Little Red Riding Hood, Thing from The Adams Family, Judy Hopps, Alice in Wonderland, Camilla Cream, a pirate, The Library Lion, a giant Dinosaur and many, many Harry Potters graced us with their presence.

Pupils from nursery and primary had a wonderful time at our second annual costume parade. Books were given as prizes for the costumes with the most effort.
