Highlights of offers for WCCH's first cohort of graduates

The 2024 global university application season is coming to an end as colleges and universities worldwide gradually release their admission results. Whilst it is becoming increasingly challenging to be accepted into undergraduate programmes at the world's most prestigious universities each year, Wellington College Hangzhou has already achieved impressive results in its inaugural application season.

As of April 2024, the first group of graduates from Wellington College Hangzhou have been offered places at several highly regarded institutions across the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain. On average, each graduate received over 5 offers, with one pupil receiving an impressive 11 offers.

We are proud to announce that 90% of our first graduates have been accepted into the top 50 universities listed in the QS World University Rankings 2024. 60% of these have been accepted into the top 30 universities and 50%, some through scholarships, into the top 20.

Thanks to the holistic education provided by Wellington College Hangzhou, our pupils have developed into proficient independent learners who possess learning skills, critical thinking abilities, leadership skills, communication skills, and creativity, in addition to subject knowledge and superior academic abilities. Furthermore, our pupils have been provided with abundant opportunities to explore their passions and cultivate their interests and expertise.

This year's admissions season has witnessed our highly gifted graduates, who have displayed exceptional potential through their dedication and the hard work of expert teachers and university counsellors. We anticipate that they will achieve even greater success in their future accomplishments.

Dynamic course selections

At Wellington College Hangzhou, we provide a variety of holistic curricula aimed at equipping pupils with a strong academic background and global perspectives. These meticulously curated programmes allowed our first cohort of graduates to pursue a wide range of courses from 24 fields, including mathematics, finance, architecture, sociology, economics, international relations, fashion management, and visual arts.

The University of Melbourne

(Ranked 14th in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 1st in Australia)

The University of Melbourne boasts a list of prestigious alumni, professors and researchers, including 4 Australian prime ministers, 5 governor-generals, 9 premiers, 8 Nobel Laureates and 120 Rhodes Scholars (also known as Global Young Nobel Laureates).

The University of Sydney

(Ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 2nd in Australia)

The University of Sydney prides itself on its highly distinguished alumni, which includes 7 Nobel Prize and Crawford Prize winners, 8 Australian prime ministers, 23 Supreme Court judges, 101 Rhodes Scholars, the first president of the United Nations General Assembly, 2 World Bank presidents, the father of WIFI, and the inventor of the cochlear implant. Additionally, the university has the highest number of billionaire alumni in Australia.

University of Toronto

(Ranked 21st in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 1st in Canada)

The University of Toronto boasts an impressive list of alumni and faculty, including 10 Nobel Prize laureates, 6 Turing Award winners, 5 Canadian prime ministers, 3 Canadian governor generals, and 17 Supreme Court judges. In terms of academic achievements, the University of Toronto has made significant contributions in numerous areas, such as stem cells, insulin discovery, electron microscopy, and the discovery of the first certified black hole.

The University of Edinburgh

(Ranked 22nd in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 5th in the UK)

The University of Edinburgh is a highly esteemed institution in the UK and has nurtured some of the most talented personalities in history, including 4 British prime ministers, Charles Darwin, the founder of the theory of evolution, J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter, Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes, James Clerk Maxwell, the father of electromagnetism, and Nanshan Zhong, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Outstanding art offers

Our pupils also gained offers from many of the world's top art schools, including but not limited to the University of the Arts London (ranked No. 1 in the UK for art colleges and universities and No. 2 in the world for Art and Design), the University of Manchester, Parsons School of Design, the Maryland Institute College of Art, Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and Kingston University, covering the courses of illustration, design, pure art, visual arts, fashion management, and creative and cultural fields.

How was the first cohort of graduates from WCCH admitted to so many prestigious schools across the world?

Wellington College Hangzhou boasts a team of experienced university counsellors led by the Head of Sixth Form. Each member of the team has spent several years studying abroad, and between them, they possess over 20 years' worth of experience in guiding pupils in planning their university pathways. With a broad and in-depth understanding of universities worldwide, the team is proficient in various aspects, such as selecting courses and comprehending campus culture. They have proven experience in effectively assisting pupils in finding their ideal universities and majors. 

From G8/Y9, Wellington College Hangzhou pupils receive individual guidance from the school. The university counsellors collaborate with them closely to discover their academic interests, analyse their potential, and assist them in selecting suitable IGCSE and A Level courses.

Starting from G10/Y11, we provide weekly university preparation courses that cover the higher education system and the characteristics of major destination countries. Additionally, we offer guidance on university application policies, personal statement writing, as well as preparation for admissions exams and interviews. 

We also provide pupils with professional personality and career tests to assist them in selecting appropriate majors and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, we help them choose summer school programmes based on their career aspirations and desired destination country. This approach helps to develop their teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills, ultimately enhancing their overall competitiveness for university applications. 

Wellington College Hangzhou conducts frequent parent workshops centred around the theme of pathways that help inform parents about overseas universities and pathway planning. Additionally, we arrange regular one-on-one pathway discussions with both parents and pupils to involve parents in the process and provide enhanced support. 

During university applications, pupils are supported in perfecting their application profile, writing and finalising the documents, submitting the application and obtaining offers. They will also enjoy the pre-departure guidance to be both mentally and physically prepared for their life abroad. 

We invite overseas university admission officers to communicate face-to-face communication with our pupils and parents, so they are informed of the most updated overseas university admission information. 

Wellington College Hangzhou also utilises the global resources of Wellington College UK and collaborates closely with the college guidance programmes of our sister schools to acquire expertise and share best practice. This partnership empowers us to offer our pupils comprehensive university guidance services.
