Wellington College Hangzhou funds 7 child surgeries
Wellington College Hangzhou is located in the heart of the Xiaoshan community in Hangzhou. As pupils, staff and parents we understand our social responsibility to support as many local charities as possible. We pride ourselves on the support we provide through individual pupil initiatives, house events and whole school annual events where we generate funds and collect items to donate to those who require our assistance within the community.
Our latest support was to supply 7 surgeries for children that were living with cleft lip and palates. Through the donation of ticket sales from our annual summer carnival, which took place in June, Wellington College Hangzhou were able to donate RMB 37,477. Gifts were also donated to make the children feel at ease during their time in hospital, which were very much appreciated. This is the second time we have supported the Smile for Mothers charity. Back in 2019 the school also donated RMB 28,997. We hope to continue our relationship with this charity and provide many more surgeries in the future.
In 1990, Dr. Han Kai and Dr. Lin Jing were touched by the poor living standard, technical difficulties and unaffordable expenditure of surgeries for children with cleft lip and cleft palate, so launched their public welfare organization “Operation Smile of China”. Their mission was to provide professional, free and effective medical assistance for patients with cleft lip and palate in poor regions.
In May 1991, Operation Smile of China arrived and carried out the first mission in Hangzhou Plastic and Cosmetic Hospital, Zhejiang, China which symbolized the beginning of Operation Smile in China.
To date, Operation Smile of China has covered more than 30 cities and brought smiles back to 32,220 patients with facial deformities.
In 2007, the first charity hospital in China was founded, namely Operation Smile Charity Hospital. In 2012, there was a collaboration with China Women’s Development Foundation, Operation Smile of China was renamed to “Smile for Mothers”, which became the first brand of China Women’s Development Foundation, emphasising on valuing humanity welfare of special children and all together, building a better harmonious society.
