Speech Day | Celebrating annual successes
On Thursday 17 June, Wellington College International Hangzhou delivered its first ever Speech Day in the Grand Theatre. Speech Day is an annual tradition of an awards ceremony hosted by all Wellington schools. The ceremony is a chance for teachers and parents to celebrate and share the academic successes of the year. These successes range across our broad curriculum and celebrate high academic attainment of students. We also celebrate those students to whom we believe, as teachers, to have improved the most, taking into account their attitude to learning and displaying of the Wellington values. Every subject teacher was given the opportunity to nominate their award winners. It was a fantastic sight to see talents, skills and hard work of the students recognised and celebrated.
We also value the holistic side of a student to grow as a person. To honour this aspect, House awards and House Spirit trophies were awarded to students who have shown their diligence to being a Wellingtonian, not just inside school but also outside school during their own free time. The work students have taken part in either as part of community projects or helping to raise money for charity always inspires me. I feel immensely proud of their own intrinsic motivation towards these good causes.
As with any outstanding school, we value the extracurricular elements of the Arts and PE/Sport. Determination, competition, and discipline are traits of those that are successful in either area. It has been wonderful to see numerous sporting successes for the students at Wellington and of course, the fabulous performances of Madagascar the musical adventure Jr.
Finally, I had the pleasure of presenting trophy awards for ‘Attainment Student of the Year’, ‘Most Improved Student of the Year’ and an overall ‘Student of the Year’. All three winners have shown true Wellington values towards their education and truly deserve their recognition. Oscar H – Attainment Student of the Year, Angelina Q – Most Improved Student of the Year and Leona S and Kerry W for the female and male Student of the Year.
