Deep dive into themes at Wellington: Secrets of ancient Egypt

17 Jun 2021

As an international school, it is important for pupils at Wellington College International Hangzhou to build an acute awareness of the wider world through subjects such as, geography, history and science. Our theme lessons not only allow our children to learn about historical and current events on a local and global scale, but also provide opportunities for them to see learning as a connected process that has applications to real life. This depth of learning linked with practical and hands on experiences can bring more relevance and a clearer understanding to the pupil’s education.

Good learning starts with questions, not answers.

What were the secrets of the ancient Egyptians?

Across Wellington Primary, we frame our theme topics with an overarching question to encourage pupils to think more deeply about a theme topic (Benjamin Bloom (1931–1999). For example, in Year 4 we explore ‘What were the secrets of the ancient Egyptians?’, ‘Why does the world get angry’ and ‘Is there anything left to explore?’ Our overarching theme questions are supported by more specific lesson questions (our lesson objectives) which we use to help pupils to make connections, moving their thinking to another level and develop them cognitively.

Year 4 pupils spent their spring term learning all about the Egyptians, exploring a wide range of geographical, historical and scientific aspects. As part of the topic launch, pupils took part in a drama workshop where they became more familiar with the ancient gods in a fun and engaging way, got  excited about the topic and ready to discover more. Throughout the theme we used an enquiry-based approach emphasising the pupils role in the learning process and encouraging them to ask questions and be curious.

To build on their learning, pupils produced presentations and undertook in depth research projects providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills.

By linking the pupils learning in this way, they are developing sound geographical, historical and scientific knowledge while incorporating invaluable skills that they can apply to real life.
