Inspirational Primary Outdoor Learning Day 2025
At Wellington College International Hangzhou Primary, we believe that learning is not just confined to the classroom - it thrives in the great outdoors! Our Primary Outdoor Learning Day 2025 was a fantastic celebration of nature, creativity and hands-on education, giving every pupil the chance to explore, discover and grow in the fresh air.
What is Outdoor Learning Day?
Outdoor Learning Day is a dedicated event where pupils step outside the traditional classroom setting to engage with nature, apply their skills in real-world contexts and develop a deeper connection with the environment. It is a day filled with exploration, teamwork and discovery—all while fostering wellbeing and sustainability awareness.
This year, our young explorers in Year Two rolled up their sleeves to create bug hotels - a wonderful way to support local biodiversity. Using natural materials like twigs, leaves and pinecones, pupils designed cosy shelters for insects, learning about the importance of minibeasts in our ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Year Four swapped their desks for blankets and sunshine as they took their reading sessions outdoors. Whether curled up under a tree or sharing stories in small groups, pupils enjoyed a refreshing change of scenery. Studies show that reading outside can boost concentration, reduce stress and even improve comprehension - making it a perfect blend of literacy and wellbeing.
Why Outdoor Learning Matters
Outdoor learning is not just fun – it is essential for a child's development. Research shows that time spent outdoors:
Boosts wellbeing

Enhances engagement
Hands-on activities make learning memorable and exciting.
Teaches sustainability
Pupils develop respect for nature and understand their role in protecting it.
At Wellington College International Hangzhou Primary, we are committed to nurturing confident, curious and environmentally conscious learners.
