The annual Changemakers' Week is a significant initiative through which Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou implements its 'Be You. Be More' philosophy. This journey provides Senior School pupils with a platform to step beyond the classroom and fully immerse themselves in the real world. They visit geographical and cultural sites featured in their textbooks, experience the intersections of nature, humanity and science firsthand, and, through interactions with field experts, transform their knowledge into actionable power.

 

Through diverse inquiry and hands-on experiences, pupils continuously cultivate leadership and teamwork skills. They learn to bravely confront challenges, assume responsibilities, draw valuable lessons from failures, and persist in their endeavours. This is not merely a trip but a formative journey of growth and self-transcendence.

 

Throughout the programme, pupils from Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou uphold the values of kindness, responsibility, respect, courage and integrity. They demonstrate progress in language skills and cross-cultural understanding while gaining independence, confidence and resilience. By exploring the world on foot and embodying the meaning of learning through action, they are gradually developing into future leaders with a global perspective and a strong sense of social responsibility.

 

Let us embark on a journey to revisit the remarkable experiences across these eleven cities, as we recall each moment of exploration and inspiration on the Changemakers' Tour.

 

 

 

South Island, New Zealand

A Classroom in Nature and Culture

 

On New Zealand's South Island, pupils experienced holistic growth amidst stunning landscapes, unique cultural experiences and ecological conservation practices. The itinerary included Queenstown, Karitāni and Dunedin, blending outdoor adventure, cultural learning and community service to stimulate curiosity, teamwork and global responsibility.

 

In Queenstown, pupils took a cable car to enjoy views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, and challenged themselves on mountain scooters, feeling the thrill of speed and gravity. Lakeside hikes and visits to highland farms offered close encounters with nature, providing opportunities to learn about New Zealand’s pastoral culture and sustainable living practices. Ziplining and forest adventures combined physical challenges with natural beauty, fostering courage, focus and environmental awareness. Jet boating enabled pupils to admire the valley scenery at speed while enhancing their courage and teamwork.

 

In Karitāni, pupils gained an in-depth understanding of Māori history and culture by hiking the Huriāwa Peninsula, exploring the deep connections between Māori, the land, the ocean and ecosystems. Participation in community environmental service projects transformed cultural awareness into practical action, achieving the educational goal of a sustainable culture and environment.

 

From Dunedin, pupils embarked on a wildlife cruise in Otago Harbour to observe blue penguins, sea lions, seals and royal albatross colonies, experiencing New Zealand’s unique ecosystems. Through on-board explanations and observations, they gained an understanding of the importance of biodiversity conservation and developed a sense of harmonious coexistence with nature. The entire programme seamlessly integrated natural exploration, cultural immersion and environmental protection, allowing pupils to gain knowledge, skills and a sense of social responsibility.

Brisbane, Australia

Ecological Exploration and Cultural Connection

 

The Australian trip focused on ecological conservation, cultural experiences and community service, guiding pupils through a week of learning and exploration on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane.

 

Upon arriving in Brisbane, pupils took part in a welcome activity on the Sunshine Coast to become familiar with the local environment and foster team cohesion. They then visited the Australia Zoo, where they engaged in educational workshops and participated in wildlife conservation activities. At the zoo, pupils observed koalas, kangaroos and crocodiles up close, learned about wildlife rescue and ecological protection, and completed volunteer tasks through team collaboration.

 

During the marine-themed studies, pupils visited the Sea Life Centre on the Sunshine Coast, participating in marine conservation courses to gain an understanding of plastic pollution and marine biodiversity. They also engaged in a Gubbi Gubbi Indigenous cultural workshop, where interactive experiences and traditional arts provided insight into the spiritual connection between Aboriginal people and the natural world.

 

Midway through the programme, pupils continued participating in zoo service projects and reflected on their learning outcomes through course summaries and team games. They collaborated with local NGOs on community service initiatives, gaining insight into social responsibility and community operations. In the afternoons, surfing lessons helped them develop balance and perseverance while experiencing Australians' love of the natural environment.

 

Finally, pupils took on a high ropes course, cultivating courage and teamwork. They then returned to Brisbane for a city walking tour, exploring the South Bank arts precinct and urban landmarks, and observing the harmony between urban life and nature. The study tour concluded with a closing ceremony and a farewell dinner, during which pupils reflected on their learning and shared profound insights into nature, culture, and society.

Bali, Indonesia

A Journey of Adventure and Community Building

 

The Bali trip provided pupils with a deeply immersive experience, combining adventure, community service and cultural learning, while fostering teamwork, creativity and global citizenship.

 

Pupils tackled white-water rafting, developing courage and decision-making skills under challenging conditions. Jungle treks enabled them to traverse tropical rainforests, observe ecosystems closely and understand the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. Waterfall hikes and river explorations not only built physical endurance but also taught ecological observation skills and raised environmental awareness.

 

In community service, pupils assisted in constructing biosand water filters and demonstrated their use to local villagers, providing access to clean water while enhancing their social responsibility and practical skills. Cultural experiences included learning traditional Balinese cooking and exploring firefly forests, highlighting the harmony between humans and nature. Pupils also participated in river clean-ups and explored local handicrafts and community life in night markets.

 

Marine conservation activities involved volunteering at a turtle protection centre, participating in rescue and monitoring efforts and recognising the importance of protecting endangered marine species. In the evenings, they experienced the Uluwatu Kecak dance, gaining insight into Balinese traditional performance and religious culture. Finally, pupils learned Batik techniques, creating patterned textiles from start to finish, experiencing both craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

 

The Bali trip closely integrates nature exploration, community service, cultural experiences and sustainable education, helping pupils understand environmental and cultural preservation while fostering global awareness, social responsibility and practical skills.

Dali & Lijiang, Yunnan

Cultural Integration and Community Growth

 

The Yunnan trip focused on 'culture and community', promoting quality education (SDG 4) through immersive experiences, enabling holistic growth through nature, humanities and social practice. The itinerary spanned Lijiang and Dali, blending cultural exploration, skill development and service projects while advocating for inclusive, lifelong and transformative learning.

 

In Lijiang Old Town, pupils participated in a 'treasure hunt', exploring the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site and appreciating cultural diversity through problem-solving and teamwork. An African drumming workshop encouraged creativity and collaboration, while the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek combined physical challenge with ecological education, teaching resilience and environmental stewardship.

 

In Dali, the focus was on intangible cultural heritage and community engagement. Pupils learned about tea picking, processing and packaging, gaining an understanding of its cultural significance from the leaf to the cup. Under guidance from Bai artisans, they created clay sculptures and tie-dye works, experiencing the warmth and spirit of traditional craftsmanship. Cycling around Erhai Lake was paired with a 'Leave No Trace' course, encouraging environmental responsibility while enjoying the scenic beauty.

 

From ancient drumming in the Old Town to cycling amidst mountains and rivers, and from traditional crafts to community service, the Yunnan study tour was more than just a journey—it was a life lesson in culture, understanding and growth, inspiring pupils to become learners with a global vision and social responsibility.

Qingdao, Shandong

An Ocean Science Adventure

 

In Qingdao, pupils undertook an immersive study experience focused on the ocean, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, 'Life Below Water'. From the Naval Museum to Qingdao Polar Ocean World, they explored deep-sea and polar ecosystems, gaining insight into marine culture and science, while cultivating enthusiasm for exploration and conservation. Intertidal zone courses and tidal energy experiments provided hands-on opportunities to observe marine life and understand renewable energy, thereby enhancing scientific inquiry and environmental awareness.

 

At Qingdao Port's automated terminal, pupils experienced digital crane simulations and VR demonstrations, witnessing the role of technology in modernising ports and supporting green operations, and understanding the connection between innovation and sustainability. Coastal cycling and kayaking offered physical engagement with nature, highlighting biodiversity while developing endurance, perseverance and teamwork.

 

Hiking in Laoshan combined challenge and inspiration, allowing pupils to experience ecological beauty and learn about environmental protection. A treasure hunt in Jimo Old Town promoted exploration of historical and intangible cultural heritage, highlighting tradition and urban vitality. Throughout the itinerary, pupils expanded their understanding of marine science and culture, reflecting on the profound relationship between humans and the natural world. Qingdao provided a journey that integrated science, culture and environmental awareness, nurturing pupils as stewards of the ocean and advocates for a sustainable future.

Xishuangbanna, Yunnan

Rainforest Secrets and Elephant Conservation

 

The Xishuangbanna trip, themed 'Culture, Nature Exploration and Elephant Conservation', offered a unique ecological and cultural experience. At Wild Elephant Valley, pupils observed wild Asian elephants, learning about their behaviours and conservation status, participating in feeding and routine health checks, and gaining a tangible appreciation for biodiversity preservation. Research at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences deepened their understanding of rainforest plants, their ecological functions and basic field survey skills, sparking an interest in the natural sciences.

 

High ropes, suspension bridges and treetop platforms tested limits while offering stunning rainforest views, enhancing strength, mental resilience and teamwork. Visits to ancient villages and traditional craft workshops, such as weaving and papermaking, immersed pupils in local culture and wisdom. Night markets provided a vibrant cultural and culinary finale, allowing pupils to experience diverse traditions and local life.

 

The Xishuangbanna programme, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, strengthened ecological awareness, promoted physical and mental well-being, and instilled social responsibility, enabling pupils to achieve growth through multifaceted experiences, exemplifying harmony between humans and nature.

Chengdu, Sichuan

Animal Conservation and Ecological Harmony

 

The Chengdu trip focused on 'Animal Protection and Ecological Balance', aligning with UN SDG 15 (Life on Land). The itinerary integrated wildlife conservation, cultural heritage and urban exploration, helping pupils understand coexistence and sustainable development through practice.

 

Pupils began their visit at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where they observed the pandas' daily lives and appreciated the research and conservation efforts behind them. They also participated in the Asian Animal Foundation's black bear conservation project, creating enrichment toys and maintaining habitats, experiencing animal welfare and ecological responsibility firsthand.

 

Cultural exploration included visits to Dujiangyan and the Leshan Giant Buddha, where pupils learned about ancient engineering wisdom and cultural beliefs, fostering an appreciation for the harmony between humans and nature. Experiences at the Sichuan Cuisine Museum and traditional tea houses exposed pupils to the subtlety and inclusivity of local culture, while the stunning Sichuan Opera face-changing performance showcased art and tradition.

 

Urban exploration involved walking through historic alleys and modern districts, observing Chengdu's blend of old and new. Through map planning, budgeting and team tasks, pupils enhanced their communication, leadership and adaptability while learning to perceive urban life from an explorer's perspective.

 

From natural landscapes to cultural sites, and from animal conservation to local traditions, the Chengdu programme nurtured pupils' growth through observation, reflection and action. It offered not just a learning journey in nature and culture but a life education in respecting life, understanding diversity and safeguarding our planet.

Huangshan, Anhui

Heritage Protection and Cultural Craftsmanship

 

The Anhui trip, themed 'Nature, Culture Immersion, and Heritage Preservation', allowed pupils to engage with Huizhou's distinctive culture and landscapes. Visits to the Huizhou Cuisine Museum and hands-on experiences enabled pupils to explore culinary history and techniques, appreciating the cultural richness behind local cuisine. Treasure hunts in ancient towns encouraged teamwork and critical thinking while deepening awareness of local heritage protection.

 

Practices in Huizhou, such as woodcarving and traditional pastry-making, integrated art, craftsmanship and history. Pupils developed skills, creativity and patience, understanding the importance of cultural preservation. Experiencing Huangmei Opera introduced traditional performance, enhancing confidence and cultural appreciation.

 

Hiking in Huangshan combined natural beauty with geological education, strengthening physical fitness, environmental awareness and highlighting the harmony between humans and nature. The Anhui programme, aligned with UN SDG 11, fostered immersive learning in culture, history and nature, enhancing understanding of heritage protection, community development and environmental balance.

Yunshuiyao, Fujian

Tulou Architecture and Sustainable Community Learning

 

The Fujian trip, themed 'Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Communities', offered a journey integrating adventure, culture and service learning. From Xiamen, pupils explored Gulangyu Island's colonial-era architecture and multicultural history through treasure hunts, appreciating the city's unique cultural heritage. Mountain challenges, including via ferrata and high rope courses, fostered physical strength, courage, teamwork and resilience.

 

The core experience took place at the Yunshuiyao Scenic Area, where pupils studied the UNESCO-listed Fujian Tulou buildings—distinctive Hakka communal dwellings symbolising unity and wisdom. Through hiking, cycling and field study, pupils learned about traditional architectural concepts and cultural value. They also engaged in service-learning projects, restoring community centres and pathways, collaborating with local craftsmen and practising traditional skills, thus experiencing a balance between preservation and development.

 

Guided by teachers, pupils engaged in project-based learning (PBL) and reflective activities, critically considering modernisation’s impact on traditional communities and recognising the role of civic action in sustainable development. This programme nurtured growth through adventure and exploration, inspiring pupils to become active cultural guardians and agents of social change, respecting history, community and nature through action.

Yangshuo, Guilin

Mountains, Rivers and Personal Growth

 

In Yangshuo's 'Longji Terraces and Karst Geology Adventure' trip, pupils embarked on a journey that combined natural exploration, cultural experiences and social responsibility. The programme aligns with UN SDGs 3 (Health and Wellbeing) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities), guiding pupils to understand the balance between humans, nature and society through physical and mental growth.

 

Pupils began with treks across the layered Longji terraces, appreciating the agricultural wisdom and human creativity that have shaped the landscape. Visits to ethnic villages and bamboo pole dance activities showcased the beauty of labour and the vibrancy of culture.

 

In Yangshuo, activities such as canyon abseiling, ziplining and cave exploration exposed pupils to the grandeur and unpredictability of nature. They learned to overcome fear, build trust and studied karst geology, combining science with adventure. Cycling along the Yulong River offered a change of pace, allowing pupils to reconnect with calmness and focus amidst lush green hills and clear waters.

 

The journey concluded with volunteering at a special education school, spending quality time with children. Through companionship and listening, pupils learned respect and inclusivity, embodying the value of 'reducing inequalities'. This trip cultivated physical endurance, courage, empathy, cultural understanding and social responsibility—a journey that encompassed both geography and humanity.
