At Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, we firmly believe that the true power of education lies in "igniting", not filtering. We reject the notion of judging pupils by a single measure such as exam scores. Instead, we are committed to discovering and kindling the unique spark within each individual.

The stories of Rocky, Ajaz, and Norah from the Class of 2025 perfectly encapsulate this educational philosophy. When pupils with diverse backgrounds and aspirations come to Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, they are welcomed by a highly experienced teaching team, an immersive English-speaking environment, tailored university guidance, and a broad stage that encourages all-round development.

No matter where their journey begins, if they carry a dream and are willing to explore, Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou is ready to support them with expertise and passion, helping them reach the academic destination they truly desire — enabling every ounce of potential to be recognised on the world stage.

Ajaz: Personalised Support

That Propelled His Dream

Ajaz, from India, came to Wellington with a dream of pursuing medicine. Upon arrival, he was faced with the significant challenge of a weak academic foundation. Yet Ajaz demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. Working closely with his teachers in the Senior School, he conducted a thorough review of his knowledge gaps and developed a rigorous, efficient study plan.

Wellington's signature small class sizes allowed for close interaction between teachers and pupils, while bespoke academic support helped bridge his learning gaps with precision. His tireless efforts paid off, resulting in a significant improvement in his academic performance and a leap in confidence.

When the university application season arrived, Ajaz was met with a wave of impressive offers — 13 top universities from around the world extended their invitations, including the University of Sydney, ranked 18th globally by QS. His dream of studying medicine was no longer distant — it was within reach.

But Ajaz's story is about more than academic transformation. The diverse and inclusive environment at Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, along with its vibrant co-curricular programme, provided fertile ground for his holistic development. He formed friendships with peers from all over the world and found passion and belonging on the sports field. Thanks to his dedication and natural talent, Ajaz shone in the fiercely competitive Hangzhou Badminton Championships, winning gold in the Under-19 category.

His journey is a shining example of Wellington's educational philosophy: hard work is always recognised, and perseverance yields remarkable rewards. At Wellington, academic achievement and personal passions are not mutually exclusive — every child can discover their own balance and become the best, most complete version of themselves.

Ajaz: When I first thought about my future, I dreamed of pursuing medicine at university. As I progressed through my academic journey at this school, that goal became clearer and more achievable.

One of the most impactful experiences was the shadowing program arranged by the school. I had the chance to observe doctors in action, which gave me invaluable insights into the medical field! This experience truly solidified my passion for medicine and offered me a glimpse into the real-world challenges and rewards of the profession.

I am also proud to have earned a bronze medal in the Cambridge Chemistry Olympiad! This achievement not only reflects my dedication to the sciences but also boosts my confidence and reinforces my commitment to a career in medicine.

Rocky: From Shy Beginner

to Confident Leader

Rocky was one of the founding pupils of Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, joining in 2018. He arrived as a reserved and shy student, but the lively community spirit and fully immersive English environment at Wellington gradually helped him come out of his shell. In classrooms where self-expression was encouraged and individuality respected, he found the courage to speak up. A wide range of clubs and activities gave him space to explore and showcase his talents.

A turning point in Rocky's personal development came during the Senior School's “Changemaker's Week” expedition to Thailand. Immersed in a new culture and engaging in hands-on community projects, Rocky not only forged lasting friendships across borders but also unlocked hidden leadership and organisational strengths through teamwork and problem-solving.

Academically, Rocky made steady progress thanks to personalised support and differentiated instruction tailored to his learning style. His confidence grew alongside his grades. By the time university applications began, the once-reticent boy had transformed into a confident and focused applicant. He earned offers from leading global institutions including the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney (both ranked in the world's top 20 by QS), as well as his parents' dream choice — Wageningen University in the Netherlands, the world's top-ranked university for food science and engineering.

Other prestigious universities such as the University of Bristol, the University of Leeds, and the University of Glasgow also opened their doors to him. Rocky's journey vividly illustrates how Wellington empowers individuals to flourish through guidance, encouragement, and opportunity.

Rocky: One day, you'll realize how fiercely those early struggles taught you to adapt—You'll laugh with friends until your sides hurt on the school trip in Thailand; a lifelong memory that you'll forever cherish; you'll play football in the rain until you are all soaked after all exams are finished, you'll figure out questions that you once felt like alien symbols in Chemistry. I promise you, the friends you make here won't just walk beside you to lessons; they'll carry pieces of your story long after Wellington's gates close behind you. By Grade 12, you'll stand even taller, not because life got easier, but because you learned to bend without breaking.

Norah: Discovering Strengths:

Finding Her Own Path

When Norah first joined Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, she was gentle and soft-spoken, and her academic performance was unremarkable.

But her deep empathy, quiet care for others, and natural warmth quickly caught the attention of her teachers. The experienced university counselling team at Wellington recognised these rare qualities. Rather than taking a conventional route, they encouraged Norah to explore a field aligned with her strengths in human connection and service — hospitality management.

Through a series of in-depth one-to-one career consultations, the university counselling team helped Norah gain a clear understanding of the industry, the requirements of top institutions, and how to reflect on her own strengths. This process sparked a new passion within her. She discovered that transforming care for others into exceptional service experiences was precisely what she was meant to do.

Norah and Her University Counsellor

With her family's full support, Norah pursued this path with clarity and commitment. Under the guidance team's expert advice — from strategic school selection to crafting compelling personal statements and preparing for interviews — she applied with confidence. The outcome was extraordinary: she received offers from the two most prestigious hospitality management schools in the world — EHL (École hôtelière de Lausanne) and Les Roches Global Hospitality Education, ranked first and second globally in their field by QS.

Now poised to begin her journey as a future leader in global hospitality, Norah's success demonstrates that at Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, diverse talents are celebrated. Personal qualities and soft skills can be just as powerful as academic results when it comes to opening the doors of world-class universities.

Norah: Everything that happens is ultimately for my benefit. In this world, all things have two sides—we must learn to identify the aspect that serves us best. When faced with the same event, the weak see loss and risk, while the strong see opportunity and growth. The more you perceive yourself as weak, the more vulnerable you become to harm and lasting defeat. Therefore, affirm this truth to yourself: All that unfolds in my life exists to benefit me—making me wiser, gentler, more loving, and more radiant.

At Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, we believe education is worth far more than a set of grades. We welcome differences, empower growth with expert resources, and stand by each pupil with unwavering support.

Rocky, Ajaz, and Norah each follow different paths, but together they write a moving chapter of what a Wellington education means — wherever you come from, whatever you dream of, if you dare to explore and strive, Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou is the place that will give you wings.
