Zongzi & Dragon Boats: Wellington’s Land Race Delight!

As the aroma of zongzi filled the campus, a unique and exciting land dragon boat race took centre stage in Wellington College Hangzhou's gym! Monday, 2 June, was destined to be a day brimming with laughter, teamwork and spirited competition.
Pupils from Wellington College International Hangzhou primary school gathered in the gym, seated in their respective houses, their eyes sparkling with anticipation. The Chinese teachers and house Masters had meticulously prepared for this event, ensuring the pupils could experience the charm of traditional festivals and the joy of teamwork.

Before the race began, each house rallied together—not only to select ten strong competitors but also to craft unique and energetic cheers.
With the blow of the whistle, the first round kicked off! The competitors sprang into action, ten to a team, riding their ‘land dragon boats’ in perfect sync. Chanting their slogans in unison, they pushed forward with determination. Their movements were coordinated and powerful, as if they were truly gliding across the water. The supporters on the sidelines matched their enthusiasm, cheering at the top of their lungs. "Go! Go!" echoed throughout the gym, driving the excitement to its peak.

Through three intense and thrilling rounds, every house gave their all, showcasing perseverance and teamwork. After fierce competition, one house emerged victorious as the champion of the land dragon boat race! When the winning house was announced, cheers and applause erupted like a tidal wave. The champions beamed with pride, hugging their teammates and basking in the joy of victory. Pupils from other houses also offered their congratulations, knowing that the race was about more than just winning—it was about unity and friendship.

This Dragon Boat Festival land dragon boat race perfectly blended tradition with teamwork through inter-house competition. While experiencing the cultural charm of the festival, the children also learned the value of cooperation and strengthened their team spirit.
