A Visit From Martin Brockman, A Bronze Medal Decathlete

30 Apr 2025

Last week, Wellington College Hangzhou welcomed a special guest – Martin Brockman, a British former decathlete ranked among the UK's top ten. His visit brought a feast of knowledge and skills to our elite athletes while injecting fresh energy into their sporting journeys.

Starting as a teenage high jumper, Martin successfully transitioned into decathlon through talent and relentless effort. His career shines with numerous highlights, particularly his dramatic 1500m race at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games where he overtook teammates to claim bronze. His performance at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games further cemented his status as a world-class athlete.

Martin's legend extends beyond competition. After retiring from international athletics, he channelled his passion into developing athletes, coaches and educators through 15 years of coaching experience, dedicating himself to building long-term athlete development systems. As a track and field education specialist, he has impacted global sports education by mentoring hundreds of PE teachers worldwide.

During his two-day visit to Wellington College Hangzhou, Martin generously shared his extensive sporting expertise and profound understanding of athletic management. His guidance spanned every aspect of track and field – from refining high jump techniques and perfecting explosive sprint starts, to mastering power-angle balance in throwing events and enhancing skills in relays.

Martin shared his invaluable insights with pupils at Wellington College, underscoring the crucial importance of enjoyment in sport. He emphasised that 'sport has to be fun, especially at this school age group'. The athlete highlighted that fostering a love for sport is essential for sustaining a long and successful career. By enjoying what they do, pupils are more likely to set lofty goals and work diligently towards achieving them over the next decade. He conveyed his hope that both pupils and staff at Wellington College would embrace this message, recognising that having fun in sport is foundational to dreaming big and ultimately achieving success both as a team and as individuals.

Martin's visit not only provided professional guidance to Wellington College Hangzhou's elite athletes but also illuminated their sporting dreams through role modelling. We believe these young talents will shine brighter on future events under his inspiration.

Martin Brockman's visit marks a milestone in Wellington College Hangzhou's sports development journey. We look forward to collaborating with more international sports experts to expand learning opportunities for our athletes and co-author glorious new chapters in our school's sporting legacy!
