SPBCN Spelling Bee Triumph: How We Cultivate Global Champions
In an era where global communication skills are paramount, Wellington College International Hangzhou (WCIH) has once again demonstrated its commitment to nurturing linguistic excellence.
This year, 11 pupils from Years 2 to 6 qualified for regional finals in the prestigious SPBCN International English Spelling Bee of China, with four securing medals—two 1st Place, one 2nd Place and one 3rd Place. These achievements reflect our pedagogical philosophy that blends structured language learning with resilience.
Research shows that spelling proficiency enhances reading fluency and vocabulary retention. At WCIH, this is achieved through phonics-based learning and etymology studies in our English lessons. We engage multiple senses to deepen understanding, such as tactile spelling cards to decode tricky words.
Our approach adapts to pupils' developmental stages. For example, younger learners play rhyming games to build phonemic awareness whilst older pupils tackle complex morphology. This scaffolding ensures every child progresses confidently.
As our medallists advance to April's national finals, they carry skills beyond spelling: critical thinking, composure under pressure, curiosity and perseverance. WCIH Spelling Bee Team training has already begun as part of our Semester 2 SA offering while all pupils practise spelling in English lessons. As our champions progress, they exemplify how language mastery opens doors to unity and opportunity on the world stage.
To all 10 regional finalists – Bao, Ethan, Gautam, Claire, Dasheng, Isla-Rae, Charles, Chelsea, Lucas and Jeffrey – your dedication has made WCIH immensely proud.
Particular congratulations to our medallists: Claire (Year 3) and Jeffrey (Year 6) for your 1st Place performances, Lucas (Year 5) for 2nd Place brilliance, and Ethan (Year 2) for securing 3rd Place. Your achievements embody the WCIH spirit of pursuing excellence while embracing challenges.
