Igniting the Spark: Wellington Hangzhou's Comprehensive CCA's

17 Jan 2025

To teach a group of people to build a ship, the best way is to first cultivate their longing for the sea.

The core of education, no matter how it has evolved, has always been to ignite pupils' passion for a diverse world, uncharted territories and a dynamic life.

We are convinced that CCA serves as the spark that kindles this inspiration.

Wellington College Hangzhou has meticulously developed nearly three hundred CCA courses, often known as interest classes.

Yet, is it solely about fostering interests?

To address this, we should first look at the definition of CCA.

CCA, short for Co-Curricular Activity, is a vital educational framework that complements core examination academic courses. It spans diverse areas like humanities, social sciences, arts and sports, with the goal of equipping pupils with a range of competencies that extend beyond academic knowledge. These include practical skills, aesthetic appreciation, collaboration, leadership and decision-making, critical thinking, and communication, encompassing a broad spectrum of multi-dimensional literacies.

It's evident that the essence of CCA is not just about mastering professional skills in areas like painting, musical instruments, football and basketball. Instead, it emphasises comprehensive training that fosters courage and resilience, respect and gratitude, positivity and optimism, and an appreciation for the arts.

In other words, CCA is about more than just knowledge and skills; it also develops deep-seated universal abilities and logical thinking. We are more interested in the process of learning and the efforts we put into it.

Within the broader landscape of international education, we acknowledge that while knowledge and skills are essential, what's more critical is whether pupils can use the diverse CCA platform to refine their practical skills, aesthetic sensibilities, teamwork, leadership and decision-making, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

At Wellington College Hangzhou, we firmly believe that our CCA transcends the mere imparting of knowledge and skills; it carries the mission of nurturing comprehensive qualities such as practical ability, aesthetics, collaboration, leadership, critical thinking and expression. These attributes will not only enrich and challenge pupils' school lives but also provide them with the confidence to navigate the complexities of society in the future.

The CCA curriculum at Wellington College Hangzhou is refreshed every semester for pupils from primary through senior school, yet its core ethos remains constant: to emphasise the five key virtues of kindness, responsibility, respect, courage and integrity, and to foster well-rounded pupils who are committed to lifelong learning.

Therefore, we view CCA courses not as a mere aggregation of interests but as a profound educational endeavour designed to enhance pupils' overall qualities. Here, we eagerly anticipate that each pupil, under the guidance of their interests, will bravely explore and surpass their limits, ultimately realising a more complete and enriched personal life.
