Creative Learning with 3D Printing at Wellington

At Wellington College International School, 3D modelling has become a shining example of how we are integrating cutting-edge technology into our curriculum to inspire creativity, foster innovation and prepare pupils for the future. With 3D printers now available, our pupils are diving into the world of design and problem-solving like never before.
This term, we have seen our pupils thrive as they explore 3D modelling software, learning to design, refine and create objects that bring their ideas to life. It has been particularly exciting to watch our Digital Leaders embrace this technology and share their enthusiasm with their peers. Peter in Year 6, one of our Digital Leaders, shared his inspiration:
"I got into 3D modelling after I saw a video where a famous Chinese landmark was perfectly reconstructed through 3D modelling. I thought it was amazing and wanted to help my peers learn too, so I decided to run a workshop. I know digital skills like this can help us in the future with jobs like architecture, engineering and designing games."
Peter led a workshop on Friday, the 22nd of November, where pupils designed a 3D model of their very own Christmas tree. This peer-led initiative highlights how our pupils are not only learning but also teaching and inspiring one another.
Another heart-warming story comes from Sammy in Year 5, who recently won an award for an act of kindness. Sammy took it upon himself to 3D print Halloween toys for every pupil in the school, spreading joy and showcasing the impact of technology when combined with generosity and creativity. His thoughtful gesture exemplifies the values we aim to cultivate alongside technical skills.
Looking ahead, during Maths Week, upper Key Stage Two pupils will design scaled-down models of famous buildings, applying principles of scaling, proportion, and measurement. This practical application of maths demonstrates how technology can make abstract concepts tangible and engaging.
The introduction of 3D modelling and printing at Wellington College International Hangzhou Primary is more than just an enhancement to our computing curriculum; it is an investment in our pupils’ future. The skills they are developing—creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration—are highly valued in today’s digital world and will serve them well in many future pursuits.
We are excited to see how our pupils continue to grow and explore this new technology, and we look forward to sharing their achievements with you as they develop. Thank you for supporting this innovative journey in our school’s learning environment, where the possibilities are truly endless.
Together, let us celebrate the power of technology to inspire, educate and empower our young learners!
