Young Minds Inspired: Shanghai Culinary Trip
Paige Jordan
Head of Primary English
At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we believe that the most effective education extends beyond classroom walls and into the vibrant, real-world experiences that broaden our pupils' horizons. This philosophy was exemplified perfectly in our recent joint Year 2 and 3 trip to Shanghai, where our young learners participated in an engaging cooking class organised in collaboration with Epermarket.
Enhancing Learning through Joint Year Group Activities
Bringing togetherYear 2 and 3 pupils for this trip was a strategic decision that fostered peerlearning, collaboration and fellowship across year groups. By working together, the children were able to learn from each other and develop critical social skillsthat are essential for their personal growth.
A Hands-on Approach to Science and English Learning
This excursion was not just about cooking; it directly tied into our science and English units on healthy eating and healthy diet. Through this immersive experience, our pupils were able to see, touch and taste the concepts they had been learning about in class.
Culinary Creations and Sustainable Practices
The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the cooking session where pupils created their own salad dressing and prepared personalised salads. They had access to a diverse selection of fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains, allowing each child to tailor their meal to their tastes and nutritional needs.
In addition to honing their culinary skills, pupils were educated on sustainable packaging. They learned the importance of minimising waste and were given the opportunity to package their salads in eco-friendly materials themselves. This hands-on activity reinforced their understanding of environmental stewardship.
A Feast for the Senses
To complement their hard work, the pupils were treated to a nutritious lunch prepared by Eperkitchen. The delicious menu featured roasted chicken, potatoes and steamed vegetables, with a vegetarian option of a vegetable bean patty. This meal not only provided a well-balanced diet but also showcased practical examples of healthy eating.
Lasting Impact
This trip was more than just a fun day out; it was a meaningful educational experience that brought abstract learning to life. By participating in this joint activity, our pupils have developed a deeper appreciation for healthy eating, an understanding of the science behind nutrition and the value of sustainable practices.
We are immensely proud of our Year 2 and 3 pupils for their enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork during the trip. We are confident that the skills and knowledge they gained will have a lasting impact on their academic journey and personal development.
At Wellington, we remain committed to providing our pupils with enriching experiences that prepare them for a future of lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.
