Illuminating Our School with Diwali Joy
What an incredible and joyous day we have had at Wellington School celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights! Our celebrations began in the morning with an enchanting storytelling session that brought to life the beautiful story of Diwali.
Senior School pupils, along with passionate parents, read the tale to our eager Primary pupils, who listened with wide-eyed wonder. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and curiosity, as the story of Lord Rama, Sita, and the triumph of good over evil was narrated with great enthusiasm and reverence.
The visual spectacle of the day was undeniably rooted in the vibrant traditional Indian attire that everyone donned. Both Primary and Secondary pupils, as well as their parents, looked resplendent in their colourful saris, kurtas and lehengas. The traditional clothing added an authentic cultural touch and further enriched the festive spirit of the day.
A highlight of the morning was the creation of exquisite rangoli patterns. Parents teamed up with some of our talented pupils, who had won our rangoli pattern competition, to create dazzling designs on the school grounds. These intricate patterns, made using coloured powders, rice and flowers, were truly a feast for the eyes. Each rangoli told its own unique story through its vivid colours and intricate designs, transforming our school into a vibrant canvas of art.
After marvelling at the stunning rangoli, everyone gathered for a special Diwali lunch. The aroma of delicious, festive dishes filled the air, making mouths water and adding to the celebratory ambience. The lunch served was not just a culinary delight but also an exploration of rich Indian flavours and traditions, offering everyone a taste of authentic Indian cuisine.
As the afternoon unfolded, the festivities continued with a variety of engaging and creative activities. Parents and Senior School pupils led sessions on creating eco-friendly rangoli designs, emphasising the importance of sustainability while staying true to the essence of the festival. This was followed by an exciting activity where pupils painted clay diyas (traditional oil lamps), adorning them with bright colours and sparkles. The diyas, once lit, beautifully illuminated the spirit of Diwali, symbolising the victory of light over darkness.
The creative streak extended to making Diwali door hangings, where pupils crafted stunning torans and buntings that added a festive charm to our school. Each activity was a celebration of creativity, cultural heritage and the joy of working together.
The culmination of the day was marked by an inspiring and heartwarming assembly led by our Senior School pupils. Their leadership, confidence and passion shone through as they guided us through the assembly, which included a variety of mesmerising performances. The Primary pupils captivated everyone with a rhythmic drum performance that echoed the beats of traditional Indian music. This was followed by a lively and energetic dance that had everyone tapping their feet and a moving speech that beautifully encapsulated the spirit and significance of Diwali.
We extend a HUGE thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff who made this day so extraordinary. Your enthusiasm, creativity and dedication were the driving forces behind the success of our Diwali celebrations. This event allowed the Wellington community to come together and share in the joy, warmth and rich traditions of Diwali, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Happy Diwali to everyone!
