Applying to the world's top institutions requires a demonstration of outstanding academic ability, and one way to showcase this is through success in subject competitions. This form of validation is not only crucial at the high school level but equally important in elementary and middle school. In the current school year, pupils from Wellington College International Hangzhou have achieved remarkable feats in various subject competitions, not only igniting their passion for learning but also laying a solid foundation for their future applications to top global universities.

In four different academic disciplines, WCIH pupils participated in 21 competitions and won over 180 medals, all from global or national competitions. These achievements, attained in the 2023-2024 school year, fully demonstrate WCIH’s excellence in academic competitions.

At WCIH, we strive to present opportunities for pupils to shine on an international stage by encouraging them to compete globally to inspire them and enrich their educational experience. In today’s article, let us look at how WCIH pupils have performed in some of the international competitions and applaud them for their remarkable achievements.

I am delighted to say that our pupils excelled in the WCC English competition. In Year 3 we won top honours, with runners-up from Years 2, 3, and 6.  Against a pool of the top international schools in Asia, three of our pupils were champions of our in-house competition and progressed to the final FOBISIA Poetry Competition.

We yielded similar positive results in the English FOBISIA Short Story Writing Competition, with Year 2 and Year 6 pupils progressing into the final round. Additionally, four of our pupils advanced to the national round of the prestigious Spelling Bee of China in Beijing.

The science department at our school has been actively participating in international competitions, particularly in biology and chemistry A Level subjects. These have over 5,000 participants worldwide. These competitions aim to showcase pupil's intrinsic interests in the subjects beyond the school curriculum. We are proud to announce that some of pupils have been recognized by the awarding body. Being involved in external competitions allows pupils to use this information as part of their university applications.

Moving forward to next year, we're excited to continue our participation in even more competitions. Our primary focus is to encourage pupils to explore their interests, develop the skills in science with the aim of enhancing their love for the subject, not just for university applications. We are committed to involving all pupils in junior high and the senior school in these competitions and look forward to seeing them excel and grow in their passion for science. Hot news, four pupils have just been awarded a gold, two silver and a bronze.
