17 Oct 2023

In modern society, mathematics has evolved from being a simple academic discipline to having a multitude of practical applications in daily life. The challenge in front of us is not only to comprehend intricate formulas and theories but also to use our knowledge to tackle real-world issues, which is precisely what the FOBISIA Code Breaking Math Challenge promotes.

The FOBISIA Challenge is a mathematics competition established by the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA). Participants are required to employ their extensive mathematical knowledge and programming skills to convey and decipher information. The Challenge assesses one's mathematical aptitude, but more importantly, inspires them to apply it to real-world issues, such as deciphering codes and interpreting intricate data.

With our commitment to academic excellence and belief in fostering well-rounded talents, we decided to enrol our KS3 (Years 7, 8, and 9) and KS4 (Years 10 and 11) pupils in this competition. We are pleased to announce that our KS4 students demonstrated exceptional proficiency, achieving a top 15 honour. Their impressive performance not only lifted spirits in our community but also exerted a far-reaching influence among the 78 participating schools worldwide.

Pupils at the Wellington College International Hangzhou have long been recognised for their exceptional mathematical and programming abilities. In the FOBISIA Challenge, they demonstrated their profound understanding of mathematical theory and applied it to decode intricate information. As daunting as the challenge was, they persevered with outstanding intelligence and determination, securing a top ranking.

It is noteworthy that Wellington College International Hangzhou achieved the best result among participating schools in China's mainland.

The FOBISIA Challenge is a wonderful competition for Wellington College International Hangzhou as it explores the fascinating linkage between mathematics and code-deciphering. The connection between the two is indisputable, as both require the development and application of problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and unyielding perseverance, qualities that make great mathematicians and exceptional code-breakers.
