Wellington School Activities: March

07 Apr 2023

In this blissful spring, School Activities are in full swing at Wellington College Hangzhou,  demonstrating the faithful adherence to our holistic educational ethos. An article published in BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education indicates that being involved in extracurricular activities offers important opportunities for adolescent development, such as peer relations, appropriate social conduct, and basic skills for academic achievement. For example, pupils who participate in athletic clubs tend to have increased maths, science and literacy scores. Extracurricular participation in arts and crafts also results in higher academic scores and better working skills. Additionally, participation in academic clubs yields higher academic attainment. Since its establishment, Wellington College Hangzhou has had a wide range of School Activities (SAs) that supplement and enhance life at the school. The academic, creative, performing arts and physical SAs at Wellington allow pupils to find their passions while realising their potential and broadening their horizons so they may go on to the global stage with an assertive posture.

Read on and discover how our Wellington pupils have embraced the opportunities to explore the unknown with courage in March.

Academic School Activities (SA)

Academic campus activities give pupils the opportunity to expand and even go beyond what they have learned in the classroom, guiding them to reach for the top and challenge themselves. To experience diverse cultures from around the world through academic activities such as debating, presenting and learning another language.

Beginners Japanese

Learning a new language is very beneficial, as it gives people a real sense of the magnitude of the world. Japanese is recognised as one of the most beautifully pronounced languages in the linguistic world. Under the guidance of the teacher, pupils have now accomplished their goal of learning the fifty-syllable chart. Pupils also learned Japanese children's songs and simple words for daily life, which gives them a glimpse into the charm of the Japanese language.

Chinese Culture Club

Chinese culture is vast and profound, and the Chinese Culture Club provides an excellent platform for those students who are interested in Chinese culture and language. The picture below shows the traditional chess day, where pupils experience Chinese history and the concentration of ancient wisdom through playing Chinese chess, Go, Gomoku, and animal chess.

Creative School Activities (SA)

Creative Activities SA offers a platform for pupils to be creative and imaginative allowing pupils to learn from traditions while being progressive. Each advancement in human history has been guided by creativity and inspiration, and it is this spirit that this type of SA aims to cultivate in Wellington pupils.

Amazing Chinese Costumes

Traditional Chinese dress culture is spreading around the world, and increasingly, more international clothing brands are choosing to incorporate traditional Chinese dress elements in their designs. In the Amazing Chinese Costumes SA, pupils learned about the history and evolution of traditional Chinese costumes. Also, pupils recreate and design traditional costumes with the help of traditional Chinese crafts - paper folding, wood carving, painting and Chinese knots.

Creative Little Artists

The Creative Little Artists SA allows pupils to paint with unusual brushes, such as our fingers, leaves, sponges, cotton swabs, cardboard, straws, clay, and even vegetables. Pupils will use their imagination to the fullest to create their own artwork, such as animal paintings, landscape paintings, etc. Pupils practice their hands-on skills and give full play to their imagination and creativity putting them into reality.

Performing Arts Activities (SA)

The performing arts encourage children to explore their emotions, expand their imagination and helps them develop their own unique voice. Each discipline of music, dance and drama engage a child's brain, body and emotions in different ways to encourage their confidence and find joy in self-expression.

WCIH Choir

The choir pupils will sing songs in different languages and will focus on score reading and harmony singing during rehearsals. Pupils will also master chorale techniques such as tuning, balance, intonation, and articulation. In the choir SA, conducted by the teacher, pupils with different voices and timbres sing their own tones, create beautiful music together, and feel the charm of music.

WCH Orchestra

The Wellington Orchestra gives pupils the opportunity to experience the magic of classical and contemporary music, where different instruments produce beautiful and harmonious music together.

Physical School Activities (SA)

Having physical exercises encourages a healthy lifestyle and develops key physical attributes. It has mental benefits, too, as it develops teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills. Social aptitudes and team bonding are strengthened by extracurricular sporting activities. It is known that nothing is more powerful than sport in bringing individuals together and building relationships.

Girls Netball

Netball is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. With the sun shining on the court, the pupils are learning the fundamental netball skills such as ball passing, footwork and shooting. While exercising their skills and techniques, pupils also work in a team and feel the charm of sports in the process of cooperation.

Tennis

Tennis is known as the second most popular ball sport in the world and is very popular among pupils. Tennis is a good sport for maintaining health, fitness, strength, and agility. It can be a great workout and lots of fun. In this SA, pupils not only develop their coordination and balance, but also exercise strategic thinking and problem solving.

We will continue updating more SA highlights in the future and share with you.
