Exploring Wellington | State-of-the-art school facilities
A year ago, Wellington College International Hangzhou held its official opening ceremony of the state-of-the-art building. Our Founder and Chairman, Ms. Joy Qiao, said in her opening remarks, “Often, I walk around our buildings, and I see love in all the details. Everything serves a purpose for better learning, reflecting a pupil-centred approach to education. I have no doubt that these facilities and our excellent academic team will ensure pupils thrive and excel in their educational journey with us.”
Today, we invite you to view the incredibly modern facilities we have at the Wellington College International Hangzhou campus.
Atrium
Wellington Library
The Reading Corner Library is a cosy space on the first floor that provides over 2000 books for our year 1 and 2 pupils to enjoy. These books include many high-quality non-fiction books to support classroom learning and personal interest. Pupils can also access engaging picture books and early chapter books designed to support budding readers. There is a library on the second floor for pupils in key stages two and up, with around 6000 books. Pupils have access to a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction suited to their needs. In addition to this collection, pupils can take advantage of inter-library loans with other libraries on campus and use the eLibrary, which includes eBooks, encyclopaedia, databases and learning resources. Librarians collaborate with subject teachers to enrich the curriculum with information literacy skills, supporting pupils in their learning.
Performing Arts Centre
Our Performing Arts department aims to make pupils more confident, communicative and empathetic through studying music, drama, dance and theatre. Taught and run by top industry professionals, our state-of-the-art facilities enable pupils to get a near-professional experience in all their creative endeavours. There are also opportunities to be involved in the operational elements of performances, concert productions and technical aspects.
Theatre
The 560-seat Grand Theatre hosts many events throughout the academic year, including assemblies, music recitals, Winter Concerts, Musicals and Educational Festivals.
Blackbox
Drama classes take place in our Black Box Studio. An education in drama has countless benefits. It teaches creativity, communication and teamwork — essential skills in any career. It also teaches historical and cultural appreciation and allows pupils to examine fundamental human issues through an expressive medium. At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we offer instruction in drama for all ages. We provide a safe, non-judgmental environment and encourage full participation.
Dance Studios
The dance studios are used extensively for Co-curricular activities (CCAs) and School Activities (SAs). In addition, pupils utilise these spaces during performing arts rehearsals.
Dukebox Studio
Dukebox is our Wellington College Hangzhou radio station. DukeBox Radio covers the entire Hangzhou campus. As part of the School Activities programme (SAs), DukeBox Radio Club operates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. The Dukebox presenter supervises pupils as they record sessions, learn how to create a radio show, edit music and spoken word and master interview techniques.
PE
Sport is another major Wellington priority. Again, the facilities are second to none: the sports hall, gym, football pitch, a 400-metre all-weather synthetic running track, basketball and badminton courts, and two swimming pools, including a 25-metre, six-lane competition pool. Few schools worldwide are blessed with the resources available at Wellington, designed to support our wide-ranging co-curricular activities programme, both after school and at weekends.
Tennis Court
The Tennis court is located on the top floor of Wellington College International Hangzhou. Pupils participate in their tennis School Activities and other PE activities during the school day.
Swimming Pool
The six-lane, 25-metre indoor swimming pool is used for weekly swimming lessons, PE, and training for all our swimming and synchronised swimming teams. It also hosts many competitions for teams throughout the Zhejiang province.
Sports Field
The external sports field boasts a 400m athletics track, an 11-a-side football pitch, two basketball courts, flood lights and a stadium. In addition, we also have a long jump and shot putt area to support our athletics.
Indoor Gym
The state-of-the-art gym on the 2nd floor of Building A offers ten badminton courts, three basketball courts, one handball court, one volleyball court and a gym.
Sixth Form Centre
The Sixth Form Centre is also located on the 2nd floor of building A, adjacent to the Grand Theatre. Sixth Form students have a dedicated area for individual study or group work. In addition, the university advisers are available in the centre to support and advise during the two-year A Level course and provide guidance throughout the university preparation and admission process.
Specialist Classrooms
The science laboratories, art space, design and technology suites encourage enjoyment during practical and theoretical work.
Science Lab
The science labs have been specially designed to promote the blending of theoretical teaching and practical applications using the specialist equipment on offer. Science lessons take place in the lab from Year 6 onwards, with pupils exploring all science disciplines, including theory and practical experiments, in preparation for the IGCSE and A Level examinations.
DT Classroom
The Design and Technology room offers state-of-the-art facilities for 3D printing and art projects. Pupils have full access to the latest technological tools and platforms. Opportunities abound for our pupils to develop their work alongside passionate and creative professionals and to display and view work in our many exhibitions.
Wellington College International Hangzhou is committed to providing a world-class education for all pupils. We believe Wellington pupils will thrive in this meticulously designed, bright and modern environment and continue their journey with courage and inspiration to achieve academic excellence.
