The Week Ahead
Senior School Matters
I am delighted to inform you that WCIH has now become an examination centre for ASDAN competitions. ASDAN is a company in China that hold the rights to international STEM competitions.
We believe organising and carrying out international competitions within the school can help further science education and improve students' extra-curricular experience. Some of the competitions that might be held in the future include Maths Kangeroo, Physics Bowl, British Physics Olympiad, the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad and the British Biology Olympiad.
These prestigious international examinations will pit our students' mathematical and scientific abilities against others worldwide. The students involved will receive a certificate of participation; furthermore, qualifying students will receive special certificates of commendation. These can form a valuable part of a portfolio when making university applications and can be added to their CVs.

Sixth Form Matters
We hosted our annual A Level Options Evening event on Friday. It was wonderful witnessing all our Grade 10, Year 11 and Pre A Level pupils engaging with subject specialists about their future A Level journey. The atrium was alive with excited chatter about which courses individuals would choose and which career paths this could lead them down. Our teachers inspired our keen learners with details of the A Level courses while our pupil subject ambassadors from Lower Sixth did a marvellous job sharing their experiences.
If you would like further information about how A Level courses act as a great springboard into university, please do not hesitate to contact me for further details.

Primary School Matters
Welcome back to all the WCIH families. I hope you had a wonderful Golden Week break. On return, I spoke to all classes and pupils in depth about their experiences with friends, family and travel. The pupils spoke with great enthusiasm and clarity about their differing adventures, and I was more than happy to talk about my wonderful trip to Chengdu.
When I think about our children and their success, moments like this remind me that it takes all of us to help grow our students academically, socially, and emotionally. Our school and community are learner-centred, meaning that all stakeholders are learners, pupils, teachers and parents.
Our recent Meet the Teacher event and Curriculum introduction evening was a fantastic way to build our knowledge and openly discuss the priorities for the year. Thank you to all 84 families that attended the evening. You rated the event 4.77 out of 5, a significant improvement from the previous year. We acknowledge that your feedback is integral to helping us improve and better tailor these sessions to the community's needs.
We will build on our parent workshops from November through to the end of the academic year. Last year we hosted 15. This year we aim to build on these with quality and purpose, reflecting on the feedback provided. We have also planned more opportunities for parents to be involved in classroom learning with their children. Nothing is more beautiful than that look of pride and love on a child's face when their family member becomes a part of the classroom life.
We aim to release our full calendar of parent events shortly.

Library Matters
Listening to audiobooks in English is an excellent way for pupils to improve their listening skills. Our libraries provide two options for listening to audiobooks: Playaway audiobook packs and Follett Digital Audiobooks.
The Playaway audiobooks can be borrowed from the main library on campus, or pupils can request them through their closest library. The audiobooks come as a small device that is kept in a case. To listen to the audiobook, pupils must plug headphones into the device. The cases have instructions inside to show the listener how to use the device. More information about our PlayAways, including some of our top titles, can be found here.
Another way of accessing audiobooks is through Follett Destiny, where we have a growing selection of digital audiobooks. Pupils can accessthese by logging into their account and searching for audiobooks. Instructions on how to log in can be found here.
Tips for using audiobooks:
- Change the speed to match the needs of the listener: slowing down the book can help improve understanding
- Read the print book while you listen to the audiobook(read-a-long): this can help with understanding and pronunciation
- Use the sleep timer (if available) to limit how long the book will play
