We are Wellington | An interview with Mr Frantisek Spacil
At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive in an ever-changing world. Community is at the centre of all we do at Wellington. We continuously strive to work together with our parents, staff and pupils to develop that strong sense of community that makes international schools unique. In this series of "We Are Wellington" articles, we aim to tell the stories of those families and highlight the special contributions they make to our community.
This is the fourth and final “We are Wellington” for this academic year, an interview with Mr Frantisek Spacil, father of Julia in Year 5.
Please give us a brief introduction of your family.
We are from Slovakia. Our family, I Frantisek Spacil, my wife Katarina Spacilova and our daughter Julia Spacilova have been in China since the beginning of 2018. Julia has been going to Wellington College International Hangzhou since September 2018, when she entered Year 2 at the age of 7. She is now a Year 5A class pupil and is a member of the Benson House.
How did you hear about Wellington? Why did you choose Wellington?
I heard about Wellington Hangzhou, which was still under construction at the time, from a colleague whose children were students at Wellington Shanghai. There would be a new Wellington school opening in September back to 2018. Our family visited the school in the spring and saw the plan of the whole school from the 3D model.
From a parent's perspective, is there any positive behaviour change in Julia since she started to study at Wellington?
When Julia started going to Wellington, she was still a small child with experience only from the nursery.
What effect does the teacher guidance bring to Julia during school time?
We see that Julia grows into a positive self-confident personality, which is certainly also the result of the teachers' approaches.
What does Julia enjoy the most at school?
Every morning Julia looks forward to school, seeing her friends, enjoy activities together, and she is also really looking forward to the teaching lessons.
Which of the five Wellington values of Courage, Respect, Integrity, Kindness, and Responsibility is most important to you and your family? Why?
All values are equally important. On the approach to teaching in Wellington, I am pleased, as I found out in interviews with teachers, that Julia's innate sense of humour is not suppressed.
What do you think of the Wellington community?
Care for the background of our children is excellent, direct contact with parents is very active.
