How student leadership facilitates academic excellence

Head of Senior School

The most important leadership team in any school is always the pupil leadership team. A vital part of the fabric of any world-class school, this team of democratically elected pupil representatives serve as a key driver for school improvement, showing diligence and commitment to their role whilst serving as role models for their peers and younger pupils.

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we are privileged to have a Head Pupil ably supported by two Deputy Head pupils. The Head Pupil role is reserved for a pupil in Year 10 who is going into Year 11 during their service period. Consequently, our eldest pupils are usually the most experienced and most mature. The Deputy Head roles go to a Year 9 pupil and a Year 6 pupil and are developmental roles for pupils who have shown both an aptitude for leadership and a willingness to lead.

So what do our pupil leaders do? Day to day, they are bastions of excellence who wear their leadership badges with pride, modelling Wellington values and expectations to the absolute best of their abilities. Their main vehicle of work towards school improvement is via the School Council. This is a body of pupils who represent the views of the rest of the school and who meet weekly to discuss things to change and things to improve and then plan and enact those plans. Pupil voice is collected and shared with teaching staff via School Council meetings. Hearing what our pupils think and have to say is vital to my team and me.

Ideally, all strategic plans from my leadership team for school development will eventually go through the School Council so that our pupil leaders can ratify decisions and share constructive feedback. Children are wise, observant and insightful. They can spot a future failed initiative, and some of the most helpful feedback will always be from the people directly affected, the pupils.

Student Leadership

As a part of the Wellington family of schools, we also pride ourselves on having a wonderful House system for competition and team spirit. Each House is led by a House Captain who oversees the work and efforts of the pupils who belong to the House group from across the school. House spirit and pride for their House is a tangible set of emotions that will stay with our pupils for the rest of their lives. Recently I have enjoyed seeing and hearing the House Captains gather support and organise rehearsals for the House singing competition. Rivalries are fierce, and the final product from each House will be exceptional.

These pupil leadership roles enable and encourage personal growth and provide the opportunity to develop skills outside of the curriculum. Engendering a sense of pride and a feeling of control strengthens the bond that children feel for their school and helps each school member feel an important sense of belonging to the wider community. Engaging with planning activities, persuading peers, collaboration, public speaking and problem solving all help our young women and men to develop future-ready skills and experience that will serve them well at University and beyond. As the international school of first choice in Hangzhou, we are immensely proud of our pupil leadership teams and their work. It is exciting to see in which direction they will take the development of the school next.
