Chinese Language Teacher

The Chinese New Year is the most important traditional festival in China and is the beginning of a new year. Therefore, Wellington College International Hangzhou organised a variety of Chinese New Year activities to enable the pupils to use their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture to develop an interest and understanding, thus promoting the learning of Chinese.

The Chinese New Year (the Spring Festival) can be counted from the twelfth lunar month to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Therefore, the Chinese New Year celebration in Wellington College International Hangzhou started on the 8 December of the lunar month. During lessons, the teacher explained the customs of the Chinese New Year to the pupils and made Chinese Laba garlic.

Last week, pupils also demonstrated their knowledge of the Chinese New Year. The pupils in Senior School prepared a presentation and explained the customs of the Chinese New Year in the morning assembly. The Primary School pupils acted out the customs and taboos of the Chinese New Year in their assembly, starting our Chinese New Year celebrations with laughter.

"Clothing is a representation of culture, and clothing is an image of thought."

- Guo Moruo

Dress is an outward expression of culture. LasFriday, the pupils donned various traditional dresses on the last day before the Chinese New Year holiday. The whole school was filled with the festive atmosphere of the Spring Festival.

The Chinese New Year is a time of good wishes, good luck, reunion, and prosperity. At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we wrote our New Year wishes on red envelopes and hung them on the wishing tree. We also wrote our wishes in Chinese characters and sent them to our caring teachers, family, and friends. These simple words conveyed our most sincere wishes.

Next, the pupils experienced a variety of cultural activities together. For example, the senior school pupils experienced ancient binding books, while the primary school pupils experienced paper cutting, lantern making, kite painting, and art painting activities prepared by their teachers. In addition to these activities, the pupils also participated more traditional skills under the guidance of folk masters.

The pupils finished their last day of school before the Chinese New Year holiday with laughter and started a new chapter of the Year of the Tiger.
