Senior School Matters
Oracy
Mr. Brown, you are so strict; why do you always tell us to speak in English at lunchtime?
It is a conversation I currently find myself regularly having around the school with non-Native English pupils. My answer to them is simple – skill in spoken English, also known as oracy, is the key to unlocking your full academic potential at Wellington College International Hangzhou.
Oracy is the ability to express oneself fluently and grammatically in speech. Recently published IELTS research indicates that a lack of opportunities to hear and practice a language is hugely detrimental to successful progress in learning that language. In addition, anecdotal evidence from international teachers worldwide is that poor or heavily accented spoken English impedes pupil progress into the best universities in English speaking countries. These two pieces of information have galvanised our thoughts and helped us form a clear plan to embed oracy as part of our ongoing drive towards academic success for all pupils.
Our developing Oracy Framework and the spoken language skills that it highlights is on track to become the golden thread that is sown in all of our best practices throughout the school. For example, our Primary School uses Phonics, Talk for Writing and Voice 21. Model United Nations, Debate Club and World Scholar’s Cup, in addition to spoken English language assessments, continue this work in Senior. And in Sixth Form, Lamda and IELTS. Excellent oracy skills help empower our pupils academically, enabling them to flourish and making it even more likely that their next steps will be successful.
We have clear expectations for spoken English all around the school, even between lessons and during an informal chat between pupils at break and lunch. So, am I strict? When it comes to matters of pupil success and academic excellence, absolutely.

Sixth Form Matters
We are lucky to have admissions officers share their perspectives and insights on university applications. The advice they give our students can provide them with a competitive advantage over other applicants. It is certainly worth listening very carefully and taking notes from their presentations. Our next visit from an admissions officer is Helene Kang from ICN Business School in France on Tuesday 8 November.

Primary School Matters
Wellington prides itself on developing leaders and providing leadership opportunities for children throughout the school, not just to make a difference now but to develop the skills required for roles at university and beyond.
For the past three weeks, pupils from Y1 to Y10 have been taking part in a rigorous selection process to become School Council Representatives and, for the first time this year, House Captains, Deputy House Captains, Head Pupil and two Deputy Head Pupils.
School Council team
School Council representatives will lead on matters of ‘pupil voice’, listening to all pupils’ opinions about WCIH and working together to make a positive difference to our school and the broader community. Meanwhile, House leaders will work with staff Housemasters to organise and lead House events, creating a unique and lifelong sense of belonging to the House ‘family’.
To be elected to these positions, pupils were required to write ‘hustings’ speeches to present to their class or the whole school. For the coveted role of Head and Deputy Head Pupils, interviews with the school’s Senior Leadership and Pastoral teams also took place.
The quality of applications was exceptional, with pupils showing a deep understanding of how our Wellington values combine to create outstanding leaders while also sharing ideas about how our school and pupils can affect positive change in our community and beyond.
Please see below for the full results, and we are looking forward to seeing them all at our first school council meeting, where we will start planning the year.

Sport Matters

Pupils in all year levels spent physical education lessons practising for the upcoming sports day on 16 November. Children are excited about the event and proud to be members of the Benson, Combermere, Hardinge, Murray and Raglan houses. The sports day encourages pupils to perform to their best ability and demonstrate the Wellington values of respect, kindness, integrity, courage and responsibility. At the end of the competition, houses will be recognised and awarded for demonstrating these values.

Performing Art Matters
At Wellington College International Hangzhou, performing arts is at the heart of our curriculum. We aim to provide opportunities for our pupils to find new passions, experience new disciplines and develop skills. Furthermore, through music, dance and drama, we can provide pupils with tools to enrich and support their journey to find themselves in this ever-changing world.
Throughout the year, we provide our pupils with the opportunity to perform and share their skills. So if your child is a confident musician, dancer or actor, please email our performing staff and share some details about their skills and talents.
Preparations are underway for our winter events at WCIH, and we would like to encourage our pupils to share their passions, skills and talents with us. Mr Perkinton, Ms Moon and Mr Montoya promote the children’s performances at our Winter Fair on Sunday, 28 November. We are also looking forward to supporting the pupils’ courage to perform individually at our Christmas concerts on 22 and 23 December.

Community Matters

Yesterday, four staff members, Nana, Fei, Will and Hilary, attended the 40th Anniversary celebration of - China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese in Xiaoshan.
They presented the Wellington spirit and values in front of a large audience of government officials of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou city and many more friends from the local community who all have an international background.

Hilary commented,
We felt extremely proud and honoured to participate in such a high profile event.
At the event, they made connections with many organisations that wish to establish links with Wellington College Hangzhou further. In addition, the event aimed to welcome all Wellington staff into the local community to help our team build a strong sense of belonging, stay, enjoy, and develop the city together with the locals.

On 11 November, pupils and staff gathered in the Atrium of Wellington College International Hangzhou to commemorate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Special thanks to Mr. Matthew Perkins for the assembly and Mr. Craig Perkinton for performing the last post.
