WCCH A Level & IGCSE results have surpassed the local level in the UK
Wellington College Hangzhou pupils achieved an A*/A rate of 55% in their A Level exams, significantly higher than the 27% of the UK's local level. Several pupils even achieved 100% A’s in their respective subjects. All pupils who sat the A Level exams are the first graduating cohort of Wellington College Hangzhou, who are ready to embark on a new journey in September as they enter universities around the world for further study. These excellent results have brought a successful conclusion to their Sixth Form life.
A Level exam-takers continued the success of WCCH in IGCSE exams in several highly competitive subjects including economics, biology, mathematics, and chemistry, where they achieved a 100% A*/A rate for economics and biology, and a 100% A*/B rate for chemistry, mathematics, and further mathematics. They have also achieved commendable results in physics and art.
Notably, Wellington College Hangzhou achieved an impressive A* rate of 33% for economics and 25% for mathematics, while the percentages for both subjects globally were 7.6% and 16.7% respectively, confirming once again our leading position in the teaching of these two subjects.
Despite facing increasingly stringent global grading standards and a significant increase in the number of candidates sitting IGCSE, our WCCH pupils have stood out with outstanding achievements from the top schools worldwide. 62% of the grades they received were A*/A, significantly higher than the UK schools' average of 21.7% for A*/A grades. Three of our pupils achieved 10 A*/A grades each, and eight achieved 9 A*/A grades each, demonstrating the strength of IGCSE education at Wellington College Hangzhou.
In a globalised world, our pupils have achieved excellence in both Chinese as a foreign language and global perspectives, securing a perfect 100% A*/A rating. In physics and chemistry, pupils achieved 95% A*/A grades, underscoring their academic prowess. In English as an additional language, pupils received 85% A*/A grades, showcasing their exceptional language skills.
With a solid foundation of knowledge and excellent application skills, our pupils achieved 85% A*/A in highly challenging subject of additional mathematics, a testament to their substantial academic strength and problem-solving abilities.

WCIH Pupils Win More Than 180 Awards in Academic Competitions
In four different academic disciplines, WCIH pupils participated in 21 competitions and won over 180 medals, all fromglobal or national competitions. These achievements, attained in the 2023-2024 school year, fully demonstrate WCIH’sexcellence in academic competitions.
English
Our pupils excelled in the WCC English competition. In Year 3 we won top honours, with runners-up from Years 2, 3, and6. Against a pool of the top international schools in Asia, three of our pupils were champions of our in-housecompetition and progressed to the final FOBISIA Poetry Competition.
We yielded similar positive results in the English FOBISIA Short Story Writing Competition, with Year 2 and Year 6pupils progressing into the final round. Additionally, four of our pupils advanced to the national round of theprestigious Spelling Bee of China in Beijing.
Wellington College International Hangzhou senior school English took part in a Wellington College China writingcompetition entitled 'Connections', which saw year 7 to year 11 pupils from across all six Wellington schools compete towin awards in English poetry and English short story writing. There were over 300 submissions in total, and 18 potentialwinners and runner-up prizes in the senior school category.
We are very proud to announce that our pupils managed to win six of these 18 awards.
Maths
In the Caribou Maths Competition, three children from Year 3 and 5 achieved 1st place in the world, and in the KangarooMath Competition, we achieved three National Silver Awards and ten National Bronze Awards.
In the AMC8 (American Maths Competitions which is for pupils up to Year 8), we had two pupils in the Primary schoolawarded with the Honour Roll of Distinction and one pupil was awarded the Achievement Roll. A tremendous feat againstpupils 3 to 4 years older than them.
In the Math League, boasting 50,000 entries, we had one pupil awarded the Honour Roll of Distinction Certificate forbeing in the top 8%, with a further six pupils awarded the Honour Roll Certificate for the top 25%.
In the UK-JMC (UK Junior Math Challenge), despite entering the competition against pupils 3 to 4 years older than them,40% of WCIH Primary pupils who entered the JMC, from approximately 250,000 entries, won a global award.
This academic year, over 20 Wellington College Hangzhou senior school pupils have excelled in various mathematicalcompetitions, demonstrating their exceptional skills and remarkable talent. The pupils participated in challengingevents such as the FOBISIA Code Breaking Challenge, Caribou Math Contest, AMC8, UKMT Intermediate Math Challenge, andUKMT Junior Math Challenge. They have made our school proud by receiving distinction medals, gold medals, silver medalsand bronze medals and by ranking in the Top 5% across the world.
Science
The International Science Bee has been increasingly popular around the world, attracting over 50,000 students from morethan 50 countries. After a rigorous regional round, we had 5 pupils going through to the National round in Shanghai andone pupil has even qualified to take part in the global round over the summer in Thailand.
The science department at our school has been actively participating in international competitions, particularly inbiology and chemistry A Level subjects. These have over 5,000 participants worldwide. These competitions aim to showcasepupil's intrinsic interests in the subjects beyond the school curriculum. We are proud to announce that some of pupilshave been recognized by the awarding body. Being involved in external competitions allows pupils to use this informationas part of their university applications.
Moving forward to next year, we're excited to continue our participation in even more competitions. Our primary focus isto encourage pupils to explore their interests, develop the skills in science with the aim of enhancing their love forthe subject, not just for university applications. We are committed to involving all pupils in junior high and thesenior school in these competitions and look forward to seeing them excel and grow in their passion for science. Chinese
Wellington China recently organised a Chinese writing competition with the theme "Change". The aim of the competitionwas to improve pupils' Chinese writing skills, encouraging them to express their thoughts, and demonstrate theircreativity and imagination.
The competition received a total 112 submissions from Years 5 to 7. WCIH primary had pupils from both Year 5 and Year 6who came out on top and won awards. We are also participating in the Global Teen Writing Competition this year, theresults are not yet available, we look forward to good news from our pupils.
In the WCC Chinese Writing Competition themed 'Change', two of our Year 7 pupils received Top Honours, Grand Prize, andFirst Prize in their respective age groups. Three of our Year 8 pupils received second and third prizes. Thiscompetition involves Wellington and Hiba schools from Shanghai, Tianjin, Nantong, and Hangzhou.
Our pupils also participated in the Global Chinese Writing Competition for Young Writers. This is the third year we haveparticipated in it. In the last two competitions, our pupils won gold and silver medals, so we are very much lookingforward to it this year.
It's worth mentioning that we have a Year 7 pupil from South Korea in our Foreign Language group who passed the HSK 3test, and a Year 10 pupil from South Korea who passed the HSK 4 test. Congratulations to them.
