What Is It Like to Social Practice at a Red Circle Law Firm?

2025-09-12

Education extends far beyond the classroom, and practical experience is just as vital.

At Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou, we believe the value of education is reflected not only in the knowledge shared within class, but also in the diverse opportunities we provide for pupils to engage in social experiences that broaden their perspectives. This summer, two of our Sixth Form pupils, William and Renesmee, completed a two-day social practice at one of China's leading Red Circle law firms.

Although brief, the experience provided them with valuable insight into how the legal system operates and inspired them to explore the world of justice further. They encountered the unique appeal of a legal career, reflected deeply on the interaction between law and social development, and gained greater clarity regarding their future aspirations.

Beyond the Classroom:

Bridging Theory and Practice

During these two days, they immersed themselves in various legal fields, including intellectual property, cross-border commercial transactions and landmark cases. Through direct interaction with practising lawyers and fellow interns, they encountered the dynamic reality and complexities of legal practice.

William came to understand that a career in law involves far more than cold statutes, as it demands patience, clarity and ongoing dialogue with society. As he listened to lawyers animate abstract legal concepts with real-world cases, he saw principles leap from the pages of textbooks into vivid reality, and he began to grasp the profound impact and responsibility inherent in the legal world.

Renesmee was impressed by the dynamic nature of the law. A single discussion on challenging existing precedents made it clear to her that legal principles are never fixed—they continually evolve. She came to recognise that critical thinking and the courage to transcend established frameworks are essential qualities for every legal professional. She also realised that global expansion requires proficiency across multiple legal systems for enterprises going global, making research and preparedness indispensable.

Both pupils emphasised how much they learned from the lawyers and interns' sharing.

During the two-day social practice, I had the chance to step into the world of intellectual property law. Through different lawyers' presentations, I not only learned the basic concepts of IP protection but also got to understand the profession of law from a closer perspective. The way they explained their cases made abstract rules feel alive, and I found it fascinating to see how legal principles are actually applied in real situations. Listening to their experiences gave me a clearer picture of the responsibilities lawyers take on and the variety of challenges they face in their daily work.

This experience has inspired me to view law as a dynamic system that requires critical thinking, adaptability, and a deep understanding of various legal frameworks, which is crucial in the current social context of globalisation.  It emphasised how important it is for legal professionals to stay informed and be able to challenge precedents when necessary. As a pupil at such a dynamic international school, this experience deepened my desire to study law and become a lawyer, since law professionals are constantly researching and staying connected to the evolving world.

Such profound insights vividly reflect Wellington's educational principle of 'integrating knowledge with practice.' By stepping out of the classroom and into the real world, pupils construct their own systems of knowledge and professional conviction through direct engagement and thoughtful reflection.

Empowering the Future:

Our Journey Continues

We believe the mission of education extends far beyond the transmission of knowledge; it is about empowering pupils to engage meaningfully with the world, understand society and form connections. This legal social practice exemplifies our steadfast commitment to well-rounded education.

Whether through partnerships with leading law firms or by supporting pupil initiatives in research, arts, or sports, we strive to:

Break down the walls of the classroom and promote learning in real-world settings.

Foster both global vision and local understanding, equipping pupils to operate across cultures, legal frameworks and business environments.

Respect and support each pupil's unique development, encouraging them to pursue what truly inspires them.

We actively collaborate with leading institutions both in China and around the world to extend pupils' horizons to the real world, enabling them to witness the practical application and value of their academic learning in professional environments. Whether in law, technology, the arts or public service, Wellington encourages pupils to move beyond the classroom and rediscover themselves and their education through hands-on experiences.

Moving forward, Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou will continue to develop even more diverse platforms for growth, empowering every pupil to expand their horizons and pursue their aspirations with courage through abundant explorations and experiences.
