Since Chinese is the official language of China, we ensure that our pupils perfect all the skills involved in the language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. We encourage our pupils to communicate in Chinese during their lessons and also outside, in the wider community, to ensure they receive a comprehensive experience of developing their knowledge of one of the world's most widely spoken languages.
In Key Stages 1 and 2 (Years 1-6), our pupils have five Chinese lessons each week. In Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), our pupils have four Chinese lessons each week. In our two-year IGCSE Programme (Years 10 and 11), our pupils will enrol in one of three Chinese courses:
· Chinese (as a first language)
· Chinese (as a second language)
· Chinese (as a foreign language)
These courses are designed for speakers of foreign languages. The decision on which IGCSE course to take will be made by the school, based on academic progress and previous exposure to the language.
