Learning English to be Readers, Writers and Communicators

2025-09-12

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we believe English is more than just a subject – it is the key to unlocking creativity, confidence and success across every area of learning.

Our curriculum follows the English National Curriculum, but we go further by using a rich, high-quality text as the starting point for every unit. This approach allows pupils to step into new worlds, build a love of reading and develop the rich vocabulary they need to express themselves with confidence.

Learning Through a Wide Range of Genres

Over the year, pupils write in many different styles and for many different audiences. From non-chronological reports and persuasive texts, to letters, newspaper reports and imaginative narratives, pupils learn to adapt their writing to factual purposes.

By writing for authentic audiences, children see how their words have power – to inform, to entertain, to persuade and to inspire.

Our Three-Phase Approach to Writing

To make sure that every child feels supported and stretched, we follow a clear three-phase model in writing:

Respond to the Text – Children dive into the story or text through drama, role play, vocabulary exploration, character analysis and discussion. This helps them connect with the text and gather exciting ideas for their own writing.

Grammar and Punctuation – Teachers then focus on the grammar and punctuation skills children will need to succeed in their writing. These are taught in fun and practical ways, always linked to the text they are studying.

The Writing Process – Finally, pupils move through the whole process of writing: seeing modelled examples, planning their ideas, drafting, editing and improving their work. Teachers work closely with pupils, giving 1-to-1 feedback to help every child shine and reach their potential.

Building Confidence in Speaking and Listening

Alongside reading and writing, we place a strong emphasis on oracy and public speaking. Whether through debates, performances, or presentations, pupils learn to speak clearly, listen attentively and use a wide range of vocabulary from across the curriculum. These skills not only support academic progress but also prepare children for life beyond the classroom.

Academic Rigour with Real Purpose

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we combine high academic expectations with meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. Our English curriculum ensures that pupils are challenged, inspired and supported to become confident readers, skilled writers and effective communicators.

By the time they leave us, children are not only well-prepared for the next stage of their education but also equipped with the skills to thrive in the wider world.
