WCIH School Activities: May

30 May 2023

The things that excite you are not random. They are connected to your purpose. Follow them.

——Terrie Davoll Hudson, Award-winning business leader and author

An article in BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education shows that pupils who participate in extracurricular activities have greater academic success, greater character development, especially in the areas of time-management and leadership skills, more positive social development, and greater interest in community involvement. Since its establishment, Wellington College International Hangzhou has had a wide range of School Activities (SAs) that supplement and enhance life at the school. The academic, creative, performing arts and physical SAs at Wellington allow pupils to find their passions while realising their potential and broadening their horizons so they may go on to the global stage with an assertive posture. The SA programme has been widely appreciated by our pupils and their parents. Read on and discover how our Wellington pupils have embraced the opportunities to explore the unknown with courage in May.

Academic School Activities (SA)

Academic campus activities give pupils the opportunity to expand and even go beyond what they have learned in the classroom, guiding them to reach for the top and challenge themselves and experience diverse cultures from around the world through academic activities such as amazing animals and scrabble club.

Amazing Animals

In past SA lessons, the teacher guided pupils to appreciate the captivating animal characters from films, igniting their creativity. Pupils immersed themselves in a world of magical creatures, using brushes to create astonishing artworks that showcased their unique imagination and creativity. They added a special charm to the activity by demonstrating boundless creativity and artistic talent.

Scrabble Club

Pupils joined alphabet games board under teacher’s lead, enhancing their word recognition and spelling abilities. They learnt new words and practiced spelling in a fun and engaging environment, fostering teamwork and a sense of competition.

Creative School Activities (SA)

Creative SAs offers a platform for pupils to be creative and imaginative, allowing pupils to learn from traditions while being progressive. This type of physically engaged learning requires participation from both sides of the brain that contributes to strengthened memory and information retention.

Floristry

Flower arrangement is an ancient and traditional form of art. Under the guidance of a teacher, pupils learn the art of flower arrangement. By exploring different types of flowers and materials, pupils will grasp the basic techniques and principles of floral design. They experimented with different combinations of bouquets and vases to create unique and beautiful floral pieces that showed their creativity and aesthetic vision.

Woodwork DT

Under the guidance of a teacher, pupils learn the skills and art of sawing wood. They explored different types of wood and tools, learnt about safety procedures and basic cutting techniques. Through hands-on practice and collaboration, pupils created their own wooden crafts, showcased their creativity and woodworking skills, while cultivating patience and focus.

Performing Arts Activities (SA)

Matthew Zawadzki, a health psychologist at the University of California, found in his study that engaging in a mentally stimulating hobby reduces stress and has been shown to have numerous health and psychological benefits, like improved focus and happiness. Our performing arts SAs works to inspire one’s mind and extend their interests.

WCH Senior Theatre Company

Under the guidance of teachers, pupils embarked on a vibrant journey of theatrical rehearsals. Through performance and role-playing, they explored the charm and artistic expression of theatre. Pupils developed their acting skills, stage presence, and teamwork, collaboratively creating a captivating theatre production that showcased their talent and passion.

Fitness Through Dance

Pupils enjoyed energetic dance workouts by watching virtual reality (VR) videos. Don't have VR goggles? No problem! Pupils can simply watch the captivating dance videos on the screen and follow the rhythm and movements for a full-body workout. It's a joyful and effective way for pupils to exercise, improve fitness, and enhance flexibility through the rhythm of dance.

Physical School Activities (SA)

Dr Michael Brickey, author of “Defy Aging,” believes that an ideal hobby would be one that creates a diversion from daily life, a passion for something of great interest, and a sense of purpose. Having physical exercises encourages a healthy lifestyle and develops key physical attributes, and guides pupils to find meaning in life in the wider outdoor areas.

Cosmic Yoga

Under the guidance of a teacher, pupils learnt and practised yoga specifically designed for children. Through simple poses, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques, pupils will develop flexibility, balance, and focus. Children's yoga not only promotes physical and mental wellbeing but also nurtures inner calmness and self-awareness in children.

U10-U12 Girls Basketball

In the 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup tournament, the Chinese women's basketball team won the runner-up trophy with courage and perseverance. Upholding the spirit of the Asian Games of Ever Onward, Wellington also offers an opportunity for girls to learn and develop basketball skills. Under the guidance of professional coaches, pupils will learn fundamental basketball skills such as passing, dribbling, and shooting. Through team training and friendly matches, pupils will enhance their basketball abilities, foster teamwork, and enjoy the fun and confidence that basketball brings.

We will continue to update our SA highlights and share them with you in the future.
