At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we believe that a vibrant and engaging programme for extracurricular activities is at the heart of any thriving educational institution. Among these, house sports events stand out as some of the most impactful experiences for our pupils. Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed a series of house sports events, including Sports Day, House Swimming and House Football. These events have not only brought excitement and joy but have also embedded significant values and skills in our pupils.

Fostering Camaraderie

and School Spirit

House sports events at Wellington College International Hangzhou have been instrumental in fostering a deep sense of camaraderie among participants. Divided into the houses of Raglan, Benson, Hardinge, Combermere and Murray, pupils form closer bonds with their peers, learning to work together towards a common goal. This not only builds friendships but also strengthens the spirit of unity and teamwork within the school. The enthusiastic cheers, shared moments of triumph and collective resilience in the face of challenges contribute to a sense of belonging that is essential for a positive school environment.

Promoting Health,

Wellbeing and Fitness

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3—Good Health and Well-being—house sports events play a critical role in encouraging healthy lifestyles. Regular participation in sports and physical activities promotes physical fitness, improves cardiovascular health and aids in the overall development of our pupils. Additionally, engaging in team sports and outdoor activities has profound mental health benefits, such as reducing stress, enhancing mood and improving focus and concentration. Through these events, pupils learn the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, which is essential for their long-term wellbeing.

Encouraging Fair Play

and Sportspersonship

House sports events are a platform where the principles of fair play and sportspersonship are put to the test and celebrated. Our pupils learn to compete with integrity, respect their opponents and gracefully accept the outcomes of their efforts. These experiences are crucial in shaping their characters and instilling values that extend beyond the sports field. As they applaud each other’s successes and show empathy in times of defeat, pupils cultivate a sense of fairness and honourable behaviour that is vital in all walks of life.

Embracing Disappointment

and Learning Resilience

Winning is awonderful feeling, but learning to cope with disappointment is equally important. House sports events teach our pupils that it’s okay not to win every time and that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. These experiences build resilience, empowering pupils to persevere through challenges and come back stronger. They understand that failure is not a defeat but a stepping stone to improvement and success. This mindset is invaluable as they navigate through education and beyond, facing various hurdles with a positive and determined attitude.

Incorporating Values Beyond the Field

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we enhance the value of house sports events with enriching practices that deeply embed our core values into every experience:

Pre-Event Workshops or House Assemblies: House Captains and Deputy House Captains lead sessions on ethical competition, such as “How to Respect Opponents”, preparing pupils for respectful and value-driven participation.

Role Model Recognition: We foster a culture of positive behaviour through weekly and annual value-driven awards, recognising pupils who exemplify school values in sports and beyond.

Values in Action: House Masters integrate value-based discussions into meetings. For instance, discussing “What does Integrity mean in the house swimming competition?” helps pupils connect values with their everyday actions.

Post-Event Reflection: After competitions, houses debrief using guided questions like “How did we uphold our value today?” and “How can we improve teamwork next time?” This reflective practice ensures continuous learning and improvement.

Peer Mentorship: Older pupils model positive behaviour, offering guidance and support to younger peers, thereby creating a nurturing and value-oriented environment.

Contributing to

Sustainable Development

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, our commitment to sustainable development extends to every aspect of school life, including sports. Organising house sports events with an emphasis on inclusivity, equitable participation and environmental consciousness ties into several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 4—Quality Education and SDG 10—Reduced Inequality. By ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to participate, we promote equality and provide a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics.

They build camaraderie, promote health and fitness, and teach essential life lessons such as fair play, sportspersonship and resilience in the face of challenges. As we celebrate the success of our recent sports events, we recognise their invaluable contribution to the holistic development of our pupils. Let us continue to support and participate in these events, nurturing the athletes and responsible citizens of tomorrow.
