Breakfast Stories Spark Imagination at Wellington

Head of Primary English
At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we believe that education is not confined to the four walls of a classroom. One of our most cherished initiatives, 'Stories for Breakfast', aims to ignite the imaginations of our primary pupils while giving them the perfect start to their day.
Every month, pupils gather around in a cosy setting to listen to enchanting stories read by their beloved teachers. This initiative not only fosters a love for reading but also promotes a sense of community and belonging among our pupils.
Our thematic approach ensures that each month brings a fresh and exciting narrative experience. This September, the magic of Roald Dahl captivated our children's hearts. From the mischief of Matilda to the fantastical adventures of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the mesmerising tales of Roald Dahl brought smiles to their faces and sparked lively discussions in the classrooms.
October's theme was Diwali, the festival of lights. Our stories, read by parents and senior school pupils, illuminated the rich traditions and joyous celebrations of Diwali, immersing the children in the vibrant culture and values of this festival. It was heartwarming to see our pupils explore diverse traditions and learn about the significance of lighting lamps, sharing sweets and the triumph of light over darkness.
This November, we celebrated Diversity. Through a collection of stories that celebrate different cultures, traditions and perspectives, we aim to instil in our pupils an appreciation for the rich tapestry of humanity. By sharing tales from diverse authors and backgrounds, we hope to encourage empathy, kindness and a global mindset in our young readers.
The glowing faces and eager eyes of our pupils during these sessions are a testament to the success of 'Stories for Breakfast'. It is our mission to create not just academically adept individuals but also well-rounded personalities with deep understanding and respect for the world around them.
We encourage parents to continue nurturing this love for reading at home. Ask your children about the stories they heard, their favourite characters and the worlds they visited through these narratives. Engaging in conversations about the stories can enhance their comprehension and provide a deeper connection to the material.
