Excelling in English at WCIH Primary
At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we pride ourselves on our unwavering commitment to instilling academic excellence and unlocking the full potential of each of our pupils. This is evidenced by our use of robust and rigorous assessment tools that not only benchmark our pupils against national samples, but also ensure they are well-prepared for future academic challenges. At WCIH, we believe in fostering academic excellence and unlocking the true potential of each child. Our commitment to exceptional education is evidenced by our consistent use of robust assessment tools that benchmark our pupils against national samples of 50,000 pupils (GL Education assessments) and against over 19,000 UK schools (UK SATS).
A prime example of our dedication is the GL Education Progress Test in English, administered annually. This rigorous test reveals that 18% of our pupils score in the top 4% nationally, while 35% fall within the top 11%. These results highlight the effectiveness of our curriculum and teaching methods, ensuring our pupils are well-prepared for future academic challenges.
In addition to our progress tests, we utilise the New Group Reading Test (NGRT), an adaptive and standardised reading assessment. Our pupils show remarkable advancement, boasting an impressive average reading age progress of 23 months over a single year. Notably, our pupils’ reading ages average 11 months above their actual age, underscoring the strength of our reading programs.
Moreover, our success extends to early literacy through the Phonics Screening Test, a crucial assessment of young learners' reading skills used across the UK. While the national pass rate is 81%, an outstanding 90% of our pupils pass this screening, a testament to our robust literacy curriculum and dedicated educator support.
Our pupils excel in the UK Standard Assessment Tests (SATS). These exams evaluate proficiency in reading, spelling, punctuation, and grammar—key areas of primary education.
