It is said that one must possess the right tools to achieve excellence. An accomplishment is fulfilled with ongoing diligence, accompanied by the joy of success, and most importantly, realised with a beacon of light that leads us in our pursuit of knowledge.
We are privileged to announce that Professor David Cardwell, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Strategy and Planning of the University of Cambridge, the world-renowned higher institution with eight hundred years of history, will visit Wellington College Hangzhou on the 23rd of this month. It will be a grand occasion of high significance with in-depth communication to anticipate.
Professor David Cardwell FREng is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Strategy and Planning. He is Professor of Superconducting Engineering and was previously Head of the Department of Engineering. He founded the Cambridge Bulk Superconductivity Research Group on the processing and applications of bulk high temperature superconductors, which can be used to generate very high magnetic fields, including the world record field on 17.6 T in a bulk superconductor set in 2014.
Professor Cardwell was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2012 in recognition of his contribution to the development of superconducting materials for engineering applications. He was awarded a ScD by the University of Cambridge in 2014 and an honorary DSc by the University of Warwick in 2015. Professor Cardwell has been a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College since 1993, where he was Admissions Tutor for Sciences between 2000 and 2013, and has served 19 years as a Tutor to undergraduates.
During his visit, Professor Cardwell will deliver a keynote speech in our Grand Theatre, drawing on his extensive educational background and distinct viewpoint to offer insight into the development and training of innovative talent on a global scale, encouraging us to ponder over how to find our own place in the world and continue to grow and evolve in the future world.
With abundant experience in a top-tier university, Professor Cardwell will illustrate the significance of education planning from an early age. It is crucial to draw medium- to long-term plans for one’s educational journey as it enlightens them to proceed and succeed in the future. An education plan is vital not only for a family as it steers their child's education but also for a learner as it maximises their potential.
We all know that the focus of education goes beyond imparting knowledge and skills. It is also to expand our horizons and cultivate future leaders with a global perspective. Professor Cardwell's insights align perfectly with this vision.
What characteristics make a pupil appealing to UK universities, including Cambridge? Which types of global innovators will successfully embrace the future?
We will find some of the answers to these questions from Professor Cardwell’s presentation. On the day, pupils from Wellington College Hangzhou will have the opportunity to engage with Professor Cardwell, participate in Q&A sessions and showcase their unique styles through their actions, intelligence and ideas.
Let us eagerly await Professor Cardwell's arrival on 23 October.
