Unity is beauty is strength: International Day at WCIH

29 May 2023

"In diversity, there is beauty and there is strength."

- Maya Angelou

Last Friday, our magnificent atrium came alive with pupils, parents and teachers united in celebration of Wellington’s hugely anticipated International Day 2023.  Together we embraced the unique cultures and diversity of people from around the world.

Beauty

A wonderful opportunity to celebrate all of the different countries and cultures who are represented within our school community.

- Stewart Brown

Head of Senior School and Junior High

International Day is a significant event that is part of our identity at Wellington. We celebrate cultural diversity and promote global awareness. Our aim is to foster mutual understanding, acceptance, and cooperation as we acknowledge the importance of cultural exchange and dialogue in building a harmonious and inclusive world.

Perspectives

Celebrating the diversity and global mindedness and awareness from all over the world.

- Matthew Coleman

Head of Primary

A range of activities took place to showcase the richness of different cultures. These activities included cultural performances, traditional music, songs and dances, food tastings, art exhibitions, and presentations on countries and their customs.

Wonderful experience and a great party atmosphere.

- David, parent

Diversity

Pupils actively participated by representing their own cultural backgrounds or by immersing themselves in learning about other cultures. Through these activities, pupils develop respect, empathy, and appreciation for the diversity that exists in our world.

It's really beautiful to see just how the countries are represented inside with different types of food.

- Vipra, Year 9

I get to eat all lovely things and collect stamps for my passport.

- Eva, Year 3

International Day has provided an excellent opportunity for the members of our community to explore and engage with various cultures, reinforcing their understanding of global interconnectedness.

I enjoyed the marching parade with pupils waving flags excitedly.

- Missy, parent

I'm a new parent here and already I feel a sense of togetherness and community.

– Seema, parent

Inclusiveness

Overall, International Day plays a vital role in nurturing an inclusive and culturally aware school environment, preparing our pupils to navigate a diverse world. Wellington values of respect, responsibility, kindness, integrity and courage were enthusiastically displayed by all pupils. Proudly encouraging multicultural learning, strengthening community bonds and developing global citizenship skills.

I think it's great that we celebrate different cultures and different nationalities.

- Devansh, Year 9

We extend our gratitude to the Friends of Wellington/Hiba, parent reps, parent stall hosts, pupil council, MC Marty, teachers and all who participated in making it our most successful International Day so far.
