WCIH School Activities: April
A research article named Interest Matters: The Importance of Promoting Interest in Education from the National Library of Medicine in the US states that interest is a powerful motivational process that energises learning, guides academic and career trajectories and is essential to academic success. Interest is both a psychological state of attention and affection toward a particular object or topic and an enduring predisposition to re-engage over time. Since its establishment, Wellington College International Hangzhou has had a wide range of School Activities (SAs) that supplement and enhance life at the school. The academic, creative, performing arts and physical SAs at Wellington allow pupils to find their passions while realising their potential and broadening their horizons so they may go on to the global stage with an assertive posture. Read on and discover how our Wellington pupils have embraced the opportunities to explore the unknown with courage in April.
Academic School Activities (SA)
Academic campus activities give pupils the opportunity to expand and even go beyond what they have learned in the classroom, guiding them to reach for the top and challenge themselves and to experience diverse cultures from around the world through academic activities such as extended reading and computer programming.
ECO club
Ecology is the study of organisms and how they interact with the environment around them. For primary pupils, our pupils learn ecology in a simple and fun way - a little garden. The pupils learn basic ecological knowledge, such as what photosynthesis is and how plants grow while planting flowers. This is how their learning extends from textbook to outdoor and from theory to practice that helps them understand the true meaning of biodiversity and ecology.
Python Coding
What is python? What does coding mean to our pupils in this era? This SA provides pupils with the opportunity to learn about coding visually and systematically. Their study starts with simple formula derivations which finally leads to a sea turtle drawn in python. In the age of AI, learning Python helps one shape the future.
Creative School Activities (SA)
Creative Activities SA offers a platform for pupils to be creative and imaginative allowing pupils to learn from traditions while being progressive. This type of physically engaged learning requires participation from both sides of the brain that contributes to strengthened memory and information retention.
Introduction to Clay-Handbuilding
From ordinary dishes to beautiful works of art, pottery is intoxicating. Pottery-making is a traditional craft that has gained increasing popularity over the years. In the process of making, kneading, painting and repairing clay, pupils experience this traditional art in our Clay-handbuilding SA.
Board Game Inventors
Board games are not only a game, but also a great brain exercise which helps pupils develop their logical thinking. In the Board Game Inventors SA, pupils design and create a board game that they can promote and play together. Pupils work in teams and communicate with each other respectfully. They create their own games and improve their multidimensional skills in a fun way.
Performing Arts Activities (SA)
As an international school, Wellington College International Hangzhou is committed to cultivate talents with global perspectives who show respect to their home country and culture. The performing arts SAs encourage children to explore learn about various ways of exploring the world and feel the charm of Chinese traditional performing forms.
Fashion Illustration
Whether it is a branded fashion show or a luxury high-fashion show, the beautiful clothes worn by the models come from the designers' creative refinement and require reference to countless versions of fashion design drawings. Our pupils in this SA learn to draw proportional shapes, find the right textures and drapes of materials, and choose the right textiles for their personal design style.
Learn to DJ
A DJ plays pre-recorded music to an audience and creates an enjoyable listening experience. In the Learn to DJ SA, teacher instructs pupils to mix and record music using various techniques. Pupils will learn how to record a multi-genre mix clip and upload it to the SoundCloud platform.
Physical School Activities (SA)
Having physical exercises encourages a healthy lifestyle, develops key physical attributes and teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills. Research from McMaster University indicates that in addition to improving physical health, competitive sports provide one with increased general wellbeing, a feeling of autonomy and pleasure, while reducing anxiety and depression.
Mixed Volleyball
Remember the 2016 Rio Olympics? Chinese women's volleyball team, led by coach Lang Ping, surprised the volleyball world by defeating the Serbian team and winning the gold medal in women's volleyball. The impact of this amazing result has led volleyball to become a popular sport second only to the national ball sport - table tennis. Wellington pupils also participated in this popular national sport. Guided by a professional coach, they having been working hard to become better and better.
U13-17 Water Polo
Originated in England in the mid-19th century, water polo is a team sport that combines swimming, handball and volleyball in the water. Here in Wellington, pupils can experience the most authentic British water polo, which is highly physically demanding. Excellent swimming skills is a must. Teamwork, tactical thinking and awareness are also highly important aspects.
